- Children Of Bodom: Follow the Reaper by Alex Gendler "chaotically fast, classically inspired, keyboard-laden black metal " While America eagerly awaits the next release from Eminem or Limp Bizkit, European bands such as Children of Bodom are busy creating actual music. Here, mentioning the band will only generate puzzled stares, but their album "Follow the Reaper" reached number three on the Finnish charts in its first week. This can only mean one thing: Finnish people have much better taste in music than Americans. The new album "Follow the Reaper" continues the legacy of chaotically fast, classically inspired, keyboard-laden black metal displayed on the band´s previous two albums. As before, all of the songs are written and arranged by the brilliant Alexi Laiho, without a doubt the best guitarist that ever lived (yes, much better than Hendrix or Malmsteen). The impossible-sounding guitar riffs are still there, as well as the dueling guitar/keyboard solos, and more complex melodies than you could expect from Beethoven or Mozart. The band The few minor changes are all for the better. The production has greatly improved, and each instrument can be heard with perfect clarity. Alexi´s blood-curdling scream has matured into an awesome half clean/half growling voice, adding even more melody to the songs. There are four bonus versions of this album, each boasting a different extra track. One of these is the "Everytime I Die" video; the others are covers of Ozzy Osbourne´s "Shot in the Dark", "The Scorpions", "Don?t Stop at the Top", and WASP´s "Hellion". It seems the band has a penchant for glam rock. All of the tracks on the album are absolutely amazing, but the best ones include "Bodom After Midnight" and "Everytime I Die". "Mask of Sanity" contains the most beautiful instrumental passage ever written - an insanely fast guitar solo, followed by an equally insane keyboard solo, followed by a spine-tingling part in which the two harmonize, playing over twenty notes per second. This album is a must have for any fan of melodic metal or classical, or anyone else with good taste. And if you play guitar or keyboards, please buy it so that you can see what a pitiful amateur you are.
