On June 2nd, four energetic college interns arrived from Brandeis University, University of Pittsburgh, Bard College, and Smith College. They will spend their mornings participating in intensive Yiddish language instruction, and devote the rest of each day in our warehouse, sorting the tremendous backlog of Yiddish books we've received and searching for hidden treasures. For information about this program, and how to apply for next summer: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/story.php?n=16 BOOKS ABOUT FILM - SUMMER CONFERENCE TITLES IN OUR ONLINE STORE Our summer conference "Jewish Stories on the Silver Screen" sold out in one week! Whether you're planning on attending or not, you can still get an advance sampling by reading one of this month's featured books: "Entertaining America: Jews, Movies, and Broadcasting", "Bridge of Light: Yiddish Film Between Two Worlds", and "The Big Fix." These and thousands more fine books, compact discs, and videos are available in our online store: www.greatjewishbooks.com. As always, Book Center members save 10% off the list price of all store purchases. THE JEWISH READER -- AN ONLINE GUIDE FOR BOOK GROUPS Our selection this month is "Descent" by Dovid Bergelson, which was first published in 1920 - shortly after the first world war, the Russian revolution, and a series of exceptionally brutal and deadly pogroms that all but destroyed small-town Jewish life in Russia. Through the events surrounding the death of a young pharmacist, "Descent" chronicles the life of a small Jewish town before this destruction, when it is already decaying from within. You'll find a critical essay, discussion questions, selected passages and a link to buy this title at a 10% discount here: http://yiddishbookcenter.org/story.php?n=10104 TOUR THE WRITERS GARDEN The warm weather means visitors to the Book Center are treated to more than our indoor exhibits. The Yiddish Writers Garden, where we commemorate 120 of the greatest Yiddish writers, also features a goldfish pond, perennial gardens, and a commanding view of the nearby mountains. It's the perfect spot for conversation and contemplation. The apple orchard, pine grove and small woodland pond offer areas to picnic, stroll or relax.
