If you think about it, there are two basic ways of growing flowers. One way is the natural way letting them grow randomly whichever way they like in any order they like. This follows Nature´s way and I think is the best. The second way is a more human way and that is to grow the flowers in order, in neat rows or patches or in a uniform pattern or design. This is man´s way and probably not as good as Nature´s way. In Nature´s way, everything can grow as they like freely and this may be the way they were meant to grow. However, some of the smaller flowers may be accidentally hidden by the bigger flowers and not get enough sunlight or nourishment. A weaker flower may not get your attention because it is hidden amongst the stronger species. Although it is the natural way, it is also the way of the strongest and fittest. In the second method, the neat little rows and uniform patches that we create to grow the flowers may not be so free and natural but it gives every flower an "equal" chance to receive nourishment and care and grow. Maybe this order is too confining or too mechanical in a human sense, but order gives every flower the same chance to flourish. The Dojo is the same way. It is possible to let the students do whatever they like and everyone can develop in a "natural" way and this may be best. But it will always come down to the strongest and fittest, I am afraid. In the Dojo, it is important to give everyone an equal chance to learn so it is important to create a kind of order and uniformity. This is what we call "discipline´ and is at the heart of training. Man´s way of order may not be the "best" or the most "natural" way to do things but I think it is the most "human" way to follow, and for this reason alone, we follow this way.
