The spatial and temporal expression of Bone Morphogenetic Protein type 2 or type 4 (BMP2 or BMP4, respectively) and their shared receptor, BMP receptor type 1A (BMPR1A)—also known as Activin-Like Kinase 3 (ALK3) [11]—suggests a functional role for BMP signaling during the formation of intermediate mesoderm-derived organs, including the mammalian kidney [13]
