The Israeli Gilbert & George? ../images/Emo8.gif
I think I've already put a link to a news item about this a while back. Personally, call me old fashioned, but I am bored to death with artists who use themselves as the centre of their creative efforts. I find this unimaginative form of self-referential art very self-obsessive and empty. All artists use themselves anyway, but in more sophisticated ways and without the huge ego trip that seems to go with this kind of art nowadays. Anyway, if your art is so heavily based on you and your life and who you are, after one creation, you end up repeating yourself endlessly. It's all been done before, only much better - most of the message rests on shock value and once you've done it once, everything else is derivative. Now they're just derivative. And the sentiment and ideas behind all this are beyond childish. It's very crowded out there - everyone and their dog is doing it right now. As someone who loves modern art and culture, it is becoming increasingly rare for me to be moved by new material. Good original art is still being created, but you have to sift through so much to be able to see it. And the same goes for new ideas. People rely too much on shock value and on themselves as a living work of art. Which is their right, but they'll forgive me if I'm not impressed. And the reason this is all in English is that finding the Hebrew to say all this so that it comes out in exactly the way I meant it is not really possible for me anymore. My apologies
