ארוך אבל שווה... Warm wave of support for Kylie 18may05 KYLIE Minogue's former boyfriend and Neighbours co-star Jason Donovan last night led a chorus of support and concern from her adopted home town of London. Donovan, who once sang a No. 1 duet with Minogue, said the star's inner strength would help her battle the disease. "I was shocked and concerned to hear of Kylie's illness," he said. "My thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time. I sincerely wish her well with her treatment. Kylie is a strong woman who will fight this battle on every front." Breast cancer survivor Raelene Boyle said: "I wish her well, and I just hope that it's early and it's a low-grade cancer and that it is resolved quickly. "The important thing at the moment is to be alone (with her family). She pretty much needs to be left alone, but know we all support her. "I'm sure it will be beneficial for her going through the shock and that early fear, to be with her family right now." Craig McLachlan, former Neighbours co-star, said: "I have only just heard the sad news that my old friend and workmate Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. "Kylie has faced and conquered many challenges and obstacles in her life and in her career, and I know she will face this new and possibly most difficult challenge with her trademark strength, persistence and resilience. "As with her millions of fans here and all around the world, my thoughts, love and well wishes go out to her and her family." Anne Charleston, who played her on-screen mother in the series, said from Britain: "I'm shocked by the whole thing. "I think it's a good thing she's having treatment in Australia because her family's there, she's got a very strong family. It was like a knife to the heart when I heard the news. It happened to me at about the same age. I think she's very healthy and she'll come through this, but the scary thing is when you go into the operating theatre, because you don't know quite what's going to happen." Wife of Ron Walker and breast cancer survivor Barbara Walker said: "I feel for her terribly. "She's just such a trouper anyway, so I think that will help her to get through this. "Because you need courage and positive thinking and it seems to me, she's got that in her. "My prayers are with her." Former politician, breast cancer survivor and now chair of the National Breast Cancer Foundation Roz Kelly said: "Our phones our running hot with people wanting to cash in their concert tickets to donate the money for research. "I wish her the very best and particularly her family, who will be in a state of shock." Australian DJ Jono Coleman said: "It's very sad news. But like the trouper that she is, the first thing that Kylie said was to apologise to her fans for cancelling the tour." ------------------------------------------ Olivier puts his life on hold By Fiona Connolly 18may05 THEY have supposedly been on and off since their impossible romance began two years ago, but Kylie Minogue's boyfriend Olivier Martinez hasn't left her side since hearing of her cancer. Martinez is in Australia and was on hand when Minogue received the devastating diagnosis earlier this week. He seized on a rare opportunity to spend some time with her during a break in her world tour. Martinez flew to Melbourne before taking a road trip through rural Victoria along with Minogue's family, during which insiders say the pair seemed deeply in love. Even before hearing the news that would shock the entertainment world, the "French Brad Pitt" ignored the requests of his agents to appear at the Cannes Film Festival in France in preference for seeing his love. As the news sunk in yesterday, Martinez cancelled a morning flight he was due to board back to Los Angeles, where producers of his latest film The Snow Goose had been reportedly putting pressure on him to return to filming. He never filled his seat and remained by Minogue's side last night. The couple are together dealing with the shocking news, which follows a week of private and romantic bliss, according to onlookers. They have spent the past week in a luxury suite at the Park Hyatt hotel in Melbourne, regularly visiting Minogue's family at their Canterbury home, occasionally staying overnight. Intimate pictures of the two were earlier this week snapped up by a magazine and a London newspaper. It is understood the pictures show the pair on the road trip and firmly put to bed rumours of any split. Rather, the pair has never looked more in love and so intimate. And, in words rarely used about the superstar, she was reported by one onlooker to have been laughing heartily and joking around with Martinez and her family. Minogue and her French beau have been plagued by rumours of broken romance since they first met in 2003. He has commonly been referred to as a "love rat" and she is regularly reported to be devastated by his cheating ways. Martinez was linked to his Taking Lives co-star Angelina Jolie and more recently a rumour spread that "Tinseltown spies" saw him canoodling with George Clooney's ex, Celine Balitran, at a Los Angeles restaurant. But neither has publicly recognised any other romances and both have continued to cross the globe to be with each other. He celebrated the first of her Showgirl tour concerts in Glasgow. Kylie's sister, Dannii, last night thanked well-wishers who sent messages of support to Kylie. Dannii said: "The news is very upsetting, although as the cancer has been diagnosed at such an early stage we are all very optimistic that everything will be OK. "We're all very thankful for the endless messages of love and support Kylie has been receiving. "I know all your kind thoughts will mean the world to her as she gets better."

---------------------------------------- Star's heart of gold Geraldine Mitchell and Larissa Cummings 18may05 AS HER star has risen, Kylie Minogue has become a generous and devoted campaigner for those less fortunate. Victorian cancer charity Challenge had buckets ready to collect money from the thousands of adoring fans at Kylie's Showgirl tour in Melbourne next week. But organisers were shocked when it was announced Kylie had been diagnosed with breast cancer and her sell-out tour postponed. Challenge spokesman David Rogers said Kylie was a strong supporter of the cancer support network. "Kylie has been very supportive. She has been involved with Challenge since 1990 and every time she's here she visits the children in hospital," he said. In 1998, she made an impromptu appearance at a book launch for the charity in Melbourne. The star was greeted by six-year-old Natalie Galati, to the delight of onlookers. The year before, Kylie handed $33,000 to the charity at the opening of Planet Hollywood at Crown casino. After signing autographs and chatting to the young cancer patients, she urged the casino to match her donation dollar for dollar. Kylie has also been the national face of Kids Help Line, Australia's only 24-hour anonymous telephone and online counselling service for young people. She recently joined a band of celebrities, including U2 frontman Bono and actor Brad Pitt, in supporting Make Poverty History, an international charity movement which aims to lessen the gap between the world's rich and poor. In the UK, she worked as an ambassador for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, donating merchandise for fundraisers and helping out at the organisation's call centre. For her tireless efforts both on and off stage, she was awarded a Centenary Medal, marking 100 years of Federation, by the Governor-General for outstanding contribution to the music industry. ---------------------------------------------------- Support pours in for Kylie 18may05 MESSAGES of support continued to pour in for Kylie Minogue today after the popstar's breast cancer diagnosis. Kylie, 36, announced the news late yesterday afternoon and well-wishes began streaming in immediately. The singer's official website, www.kylie.com, received so many hits yesterday it could not cope and has been disabled temporarily. "Due to the overwhelming response to today's sad news regarding Kylie we have had to disable the site temporarily," a message read on the site. In the UK, Kylie's great uncle Ronald Riddiford spoke of his feeling of disbelief. The 73-year-old, from Maesteg, south Wales, said he was shocked to hear the news. "The whole family has been shocked to hear the news," Mr Riddiford said. "You have just got to hope for the best. We do not know yet how serious it is. It could be something which can just be treated with medication and that's it. "It's no good fearing the worst. Millions of people have come through this successfully in the past." Mr Riddiford said Kylie's grandmother Millie Jones, 81, was currently in Wales visiting friends and family and would be looking to return to Australia as soon as possible. "She is very close to her, they are a very close family, and she will be devastated by the news." Kylie is in Melbourne with her beau, French actor Olivier Martinez, her parents Carol and Ron and brother Brendan. Her sister Dannii is expected to fly in from London today. She will undergo immediate treatment for the illness and is expected to enter hospital in Melbourne today or tomorrow. Kylie has apologised for postponing the remaining dates of her sell-out Showgirl Tour. Sydney shows were to begin tomorrow, followed by performances in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Australia's biggest music star made her name on the long-running soap opera Neighbours in the late 1980s before embarking on a successful international singing career with songs such as Locomotion, I Should Be So Lucky, Fever, Confide in Me and Can't Get You Out of My Head. Actor Anne Charleston, who played Madge Ramsay and Kylie's on-screen mother in Neighbours, said the news was like "a stab to the heart". "If it's diagnosed early enough, it can be treated and I think it's a good thing that she's in Australia with her family," Charleston told GMTV in the UK. "They are a very close family and you do need your family around you. "When I heard, it was like a stab to the heart because it happened to me at that same age. "I think she'll come through it fine. She's very healthy generally and I'm sure she will come through it, but it's an emotional thing having something like this because you go into the operation not knowing quite what's going to happen." Sir Elton John also passed on a message to the singer. "He wishes her lots of love and a speedy recovery," a spokesman for the entertainer said. Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, who had a scare with the disease 13 years ago, said Kylie was in her thoughts. "Like everyone else, Kylie is in my thoughts and I hope she makes a successful and speedy recovery," Halliwell said. "No women are immune to breast cancer. It does not discriminate, it can happen to anyone at any time. "Awareness is everything and I would hope that this sad news encourages women everywhere to get regular checks."
