Born in Paris on the 29th November 1972, Rodrigo is the son of Nelson and Regina de Paula Pessoa. In1981 Rodrigo took part in his first competition with ponies at Hickstead, England and in 1984 he obtained his first title – Champion of the pony class in Belgium. In 1985 Rodrigo was again pony Champion in Belgium and also in England. In 1988 he began to compete in the more important Grand Prix, such as Francoville in France, after winning the junior Grand Prix at Milan in Italy and at Reims in France. In1989 Rodrigo finished the European Junior Championship in first place but he did not take the title because of his brazilian nationality. In 1990 there began the long list of victories, the World Cup being the most traditional. We begin, still in 1990, with the GPs at Nice in France and at Donaueschingen in Germany. In this same year Rodrigo won the opening class of the World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1991 he won the GPs of Zuidlaren and Paderborn, apart from other important classifications. Rodrigo’s first great jumping year came in 1992 when at 19 years of age, he was the youngest rider to take part in the Olympic Games at Barcelona, finishing 9th in the individual placing. With the experience of na Olympiad, Rodrigo went on to win GPs such as Wiesbaden, Paris and Aachen, all in 1993. In this same year he won his first Derby at Eindhoven, the ‘registered mark’ of his father. In 1994, already foreseeing his participation in the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Rodrigo won the GPs at Aachen and Aarhus and trhe following year he was a team gold medallist in the Argentine Pan American Games. In 1996 came his Olympic consagration. With an impeccable performance, Rodrigo was the most important brazilian rider in the team’s conquest of the bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympics. With two Olympics, one bronze Olympic medal, a gold Pan American medal and various GP victories under his belt, it was time to create a greater objective. In 1997 Rodrigo prepared himself to move one step further up the ladder, winning the GPs of Geesteren, Mannheim, and Aachen. The hour had arrived to dispute the Show Jumping World Cup with excellent chances of becoming Champion. Once again Rodrigo showed he was determined to create an epoch in the sport. In Helsinki in Finland, rodrigo and Baloubet du Rouet became World Cup Champions. If this were not enough, and riding another horse, this time Lianos, Rodrigo took part in The World Championship in Rome and with a thrilling performance in the final round, became World Champion. He also won the Rotterdam GP and and received a prize for the world’s best rider, as well as the "Show Jumping Year" trophy. In 1999 Rodrigo left the lovers of show jumping astonished by becoming twice World Cup Champion, again riding Baloubet du Rouet. In this same year he won the GPs at Paris-Bercy, Berlin and Amsterdam and also won the La Baule Derby. In 1999 his main conquest, after the world Cup, was to finish at the top of the World Ranking, a position which he holds until today. In the year 2000, through a partnership with the company SPORTCOM, directed by fellow rider and friend Andre Beck, Rodrigo has brought soccer into show jumping. The contract with Vasco da Gama Club makes sporting history and to celebrate the partnership, Rodrigo won for the third consecutive time the World Cup and reinforced his indication as the favorite to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics which will take place in Sidney, Australia.
