But today’s headlines are tomorrow’s history – even if we’re not sure which headlines will have lasting importance. Jewish history comes from all over the world, but here at the end of the 20th century, Jewish headlines are pretty much centered in one place. Looking for the News of the Jews? Look in Israel. In a hundred years, they’ll still be telling the story of how we brought 14,000 Jews from Ethiopia in a single weekend. It’s not just about being in the news – it’s about making the news. A lot of Jewish history is about what other people did to us, for good or ill. Most of Israel’s story is about what the Jews choose to do for themselves. The future of the Jewish people is in Israel, and any Jew can come to Israel and help determine what that future will be. This is where we vote and act. We have no one but ourselves to blame for our failures, and no one but ourselves to thank for our successes. And we know our great-grandchildren will read about us.
