The Last Train Leaving Penn Station

The Last Train Leaving Penn Station

<div align="left"> While staying with friends at Woodmere, Long Island, during a visit to the United States in the 1980s, I went out on my own one evening to enjoy a show on Broadway. My friends had assured me that the Long Island trains continue to run late into the night, so that I would be able to return to Woodmere after the show. When the show ended, I walked to Penn Station, arriving at about ten minutes to midnight. I spotted a notice board displaying the times of last trains to the various destinations, and discovered to my horror that the last train to Woodmere had departed several minutes earlier. Observing that the last trains on some of the other railway lines had not yet left, I purchased a street map of Long Island at a kiosk, and frantically checked various lines passing within a few miles of Woodmere against the last-train times. Finding a suitable line, I ran to the platform and boarded the last train as it was about to leave. On alighting, my map helped me find the way to Woodmere on foot, a brisk walk of some forty minutes in the frosty night air. The next morning I told my hosts what had happened. They were very perplexed, and decided to check with the railway company, which confirmed that the last train to Woodmere does indeed leave Penn Station at about a quarter to midnight. However, they went on to reassure us that the first train of the following day departs just a few minutes after midnight! Being used to the London Underground system where I was accustomed to last trains generally departing before midnight, and first trains starting out after 5 am, I had naturally taken at face value the last-train times posted at Penn Station, and been seriously inconvenienced as a result. Although this incident is amusing in retrospect, it well illustrates the possible consequences of inappropriate public information boards. The information given in this particular case was perfectly accurate, of course, but totally misleading: it would have been better to prominently display the fact that trains run 24 hours a day.
