statement of purpose

statement of purpose

North Americans are very strict

When they tell you that there is a limit of pages or a word count - they mean it.
Some will stop reading after the limit.
To my dismay, I have had points taken off even when only a guideline was provided - I tend to write long essays/papers.

You know who else is very strict?

Journals. To publish an article it has to adhere to the word count restrictions. So - doing so for one's statement of purpose is great practice for the rest of one's academic career.

Therefore, it's also fair and reasonable that you had points taken of for length - length is not a writing goal to aspire to, or a positive thing necessarily.

A journal is different

My mistake was to write a research paper on a topic that the professor specialized in (I sort of stumbled into his course), and who referred to my topic of choice as "very ambitious". I knew from the start that he disagreed with me and with the documented facts that were exposed by everyone who had researched and written about the subject. Some of what I had written was based on a very high-profile exposé and supported by Jews and non-Jews alike. My professor was a Jew who refused to accept that, had they not been so selfishly concerned with their own self-preservation, Jews could have done a lot more to prevent some of what had occurred. My professor was a man who believed that Jews could do no wrong.

In this case, there was no word count limit - he was just looking for ways to dismiss the most crucial points that I had included in my paper.

I was so furious with him that I told the writer/professor, a Jew, who had exposed the unknown facts in the above well-known book...

The foundations of good writing

Are the same for a journal article, an essay for class, or a statement of purpose. This isn't about your professor's religiosity, and honestly I think it would be best not to go on such tangents, they aren't relevant or helpful for the person asking the question.

Writing concisely and making every word count is an important skill for anyone who communicates knowledge. He should start with his statement of purpose, not just because that's the requirement - but because that is part of what good writing is.

Writing, rhetoric, and communicating facts

Happens to be my field of expertise. And those who write and teach essay writing agree that I am very good at what I do.
