I was at the NY premiere last night with Nicole and I can tell you she was luminous on screen -- and off -- but she won't be nommed for this, no, no. These filmmakers set up a fascinating premise, but don't do anything with it. So ... OK, once you've convinced a woman that a child is really her dead husband, what would happen next? Think of the 1,000 fascinating plot twists you could give this. But these filmmakers don't give it any. The whole thrust of the movie is convincing Nicole that this reincarnation is real, then, kabang, they give us the ending, which is a nice touch -- I liked it. But the movie is a one-note song. And the lyrics -- the script -- terrible. At the party after the screening, held in that goregous jewel box the Boat House in Central Park, the filmmakers were all over me, "Should we invest in an Oscar campaign for Nicole? Huh? Huh?" I told them "No" - which they did not take well - blaming the advice on how poorly suspense pix do at the Oscars. That's true, of course, but even if "Birth" hoped to be that rare "Silence of the Lambs" exception, it'll never happen. It's just not good enuf. In fact, given the movie's great premise and lead star, it's a big disappointment. Most of the journos who were with me last night felt the same way. As my date I brought with me my boss, Richard Spencer, editor-in-chief of In Touch Weekly -- he used to write for the TV soaps (as well as being a soap mag editor -- he launched Soap Opera Update and Soaps in Depth) -- and for hours after seeing the movie Richard was obsessed with dreaming up plot scenarios that COULD have been. Richard came up with some DOOZIES, too, but, alas, he kept having to shrug his shoulders, sighing, "but, of course, they didn't do that ... damn ..." Lauren's this movie's salvation. As Richard said last night, "Just when you start thinking, 'This movie really sucks,' here comes Lauren with a caustic zinger -- just one line that saves the day." But she's an oddball, that Lauren. She lives only a slight stroll away from the Boat House -- in the Dakota, where John Lennon was shot -- but she didn't come to the party. Maybe she thought someone might finally pop her off, too. As I'm sure you know, she's in the pantheon of showbiz's biggest bitches -- everybody trades horror stories about her all the time. I was SHOCKED to see that Nicole wanted to work with her again after Dogville. Lauren drove them all nutso during that film shoot -- even after hours back at the hotel where she insisted upon blaring her TV REALLY REALLY LOUD so she could fall asleep to the defeaning noise. Lars von Triers kept knocking on her door, 'TURN THAT FUCKING THING DOWN, GODDAMNIT' and Lauren, that old battle ax, would open the door and come out SWINGING AT HIM!!!!!!! HA!!!!! RUN, LARS, RUN!!!!!!!!
