Hi, I had the chance to beta test Rising-Eagle and came up with the following conclusions about the game. Perhaps I can contribute a bit of my professional experience. I won't go into things like gameplay or game mechanics because that is somewhat subjective to each person's liking. Please consider the following as it is written simply to improve the game and not to make any personal insults to the Rising Eagle team. Graphics: Currently, the game simply does not meet up with any standards by either current or relatively close past games. As a first impression it seems that the modeling, texturing, lighting and shading job appear like a game made from around 10 years ago. Even if you do compare Rising-Eagle to games like CounterStrike (with the high definition pack) or even the original Enemy Territory it hardly meets with those. There's hardly any real lighting used in the game. The models look very flat. It doesn't seem like pre-rendered shadows were even used which is a must-do on today's games. Simple normal mapping on things like weapons should have been used for better realism. These are things that don't take a lot of time to create (relative to an entire game development). I'm sorry to say but right now it looks like a half-assed on all of these things. If I compare the game to more recent/decent games like Quake Wars there is such a huge gap between the two which makes me wonder if Rising Eagle is ever going to succeed. The visual quality does not even scratch the surface of these games. Even older titles like BattleField look visually more complete, and run much faster, which brings me to the next section. Slowness: Contrary to the impression that the game was made from 10 years ago, it runs very slowly on a decent machine which makes me wonder what was done so wrong? My first thought is bad programming. Things like grass make the engine run VERY slow which should not really happen because grass (should) hardly contains any geometry or texture information. I did not investigate it that deeply but perhaps the grass was created as a seperate entities as opposed to the convention that it should be part of the level. There are also some technologies that should speed that up and I won't go into those on the forums but it's something the creators should deeply consider. Grass isn't the only thing that runs slowly, everything does. Even places like narrow streets which hardly contain any geometry or objects runs at around 15 FPS on a decent machine. This should not happen. My other thought is a bad artist. A good game artist should know how to make a good looking model with as little use of shaders or geometry. That's because each usage of a polygon or a shader multiplied by the number of objects on the screen can realy strain the video card. In a way a game artist should know a bit about how a game engine works in order to do graphics for one because a bad artist can ruin an entire level by doing the wrong things. Another thought was that perhaps it's very slow because the game is runs in debug mode? I haven't investigated that but I know that it can seriously slow a game engine down. I understand that the game is still in a beta stage which means there are some things left to do, finish or polish. But currently the game looks like it's more of a pre-alpha release rather than what an open beta should be. Right now it's simply screaming "Don't let me out yet!! I need more time!!". It's very bad first impression and is quite a shame because it's going to shun out a lot of player (like me) who are seriously giving this game a chance. I hope this helps and seriously taken into consideration so that my time was not wasted. - Yaniv P.
