Prince Rocks Tower Records! March 21, 2006 In a very rare public appearance, recording superstar PRINCE marked the release of his new album 3121 by playing a private show for a few friends and fans at Tower Records on the world-famous Sunset Strip just after midnight Monday night. Although he was promoting his new album, Prince treated fans to some old hits by performing "Let's Go Crazy" and "Purple Rain." A consummate showman, the artist is notably reserved off-stage. After establishing himself in the '80s with a series of groundbreaking albums, Prince became embroiled in contract disagreements with Warner Brothers and ended his contract with the studio. He set up his own label, NPG, in 1996. In the past decade, Prince has released an eclectic mix of albums, including everything from instrumental and jazz-infused jams to the Grammy-nominated Musicology in 2004. Back and better than ever, his new album hits stores today. Billboard calls 3121 "a testament to the singer's versatility and musicianship." With his signature blend of musical styles, rocking guitar, and that famously twisted falsetto, Prince brilliantly mixes past and present influences with thoughtful precision on what is already being called a breakthrough comeback CD. Refusing to compromise his eccentric style, critics and fans all agree that Prince can do whatever he wants whenever he wants. This year, 3121 decidedly puts him back in the spotlight and on the charts. The crowd at Tower Records would certainly agree that's right where pop's most notoriously diverse star belongs. Joining Prince to drum up interest in the new CD was longtime friend SHEILA E., who perhaps best summed up the reaction to last night's show: "It was awesome!!"
