New IBCLC's in Israel

until you are certified

It is not ethical or legal for non-certified professionals to take money for a service they are not certified to perform. This is the only country in the world where students learning to be yoetsot hanaka charge for their services. remember, the whole idea of certification is to protect mothers and babies. Would you take your baby to a surgeon who is not certified? Or a dentist?

../images/Emo3.gif

New IBCLC's in Israel

Remember, as in any profession, there are better practitioners than others. If anyone has a problem with an IBCLC, please let me know. We now have a committee to take care of complaints and problems. Beware of those who are not IBCLC. You have no protection!!

The purpose of certification

is to protect the public.......in this case, mothers and babies. It is true that someone could watch the series on breastfeeding on Hop HOrim, and decide to call herself a yoetset hanaka and start doing house calls. There is someone out there doing house calls who never even took any course, and calls herself a yoetset hanaka and is doing alot of damage. there are many people out there who are doing just that, and doing damage. the mother thinks she saw a yoetset hanaka, does what she says, and either the baby nearly starves becuase she is not really breastfeeding, or the mother gives up becuase the problem is not solved. By the way, the hours that people do in private visits are not counted toward the 4000 or 2500 hours, and the certification board does not approve those hours. All of us in the profession did many hours voluntarily in order to get certified, either as La Leche Leaders, or working with doctors, or other lactation consultants. that is the way it is done. that is what is done in most professions.

When they are learning a profession

I am not saying that they shoudl never take money for their services, but we are talking about students who have not finished their studies and are not certified by any organization to touch mothers and babies. Again, the purpose of certification is to PROTECT mothers and babies. there are too many people out there who have done a five day course and call themselves yoetsot hanaka and do not know how to help mothers and babies. that is scarey. would you take your child to a doctor who has not passed his boards and gotten certified??

U R punishing the wrong people

Your rules have NO influence over these people who calls themselves YOATZOT after 5 days. So, you make harsh rules against those women who took the full IBCLC course and can probably give real help and also can recognize when their knowledge is not enough and refer to the experts. Earlier I made a mistake in my calculations: 4000 hrs are not 1 year of part-time but TWO years of FULL TIME Job - 100 weeks of 40 hrs. So, as a believer of WOMEN'S WRIGHT TO RECIEVE FAIR PAIMENT FOR THEIR WORK, I believe that you should come up with a reasonable intern program, like in other professions including medicine, and in the mean time at list let your best student make some kind of living.

That's the point

First of all, these students have to have a supervisor that they can call if they have a problem, BUT, sometimes lack of experience causes them to miss the real problem. If you know that the woman that is helping you is a student, and is not certified, and you agree to have her help you, that is another thing. Many of these students take as much money as IBCLC's who have been working for 20 years......do you think that this is ok? Many moms do not even know that they have gotten poor care until by chance they meet a real IBCLC and realize that the baby is not latching well. Another point.........there are some IBCLC's who are not very good clinicians also..........but at least they are subject to a board of inquiry if something goes wrong......others are not. what is sad is that many of these students will not ever be certified becuase they have been working on their own, uncertified taking money. The international board is horrified by this and will probaby not certify them or allow them to take the exam.

It is not punishment

And we do have excellent intern programs where students can practice in a supervised framework. I am in charge of such programs now and will make sure that there are fields to do this all over the country. Finishing a course does not mean that you can go out and touch mothers and babies.........even the exam is an entry level exam. 4000 hours is for people who do not have an academic degree. In most professions, an academic degree is important. take this example: Someone has taken hundreds of driving lessons. would you hire that person to drive your children from place to place before he has passed the driving test? even after passing a driving test, the student has to drive with an experienced driver for another 3 months, and only after years of experience is he considered a good driver. YOu have to take lives of mothers and babies more seriously. when these women are certified, they will be able to work for payment, but until then, they will have to do internship as they do in the rest of the world, which is under supervision with experiences IBCLC's who have been certified for at least 5 years. again, I am thinking of protecting mothers and babies, and so should you.
