May I join the club?

Hello to all the forum members, I got really bored and thought about this wonderful idea of joining here and improve my English. My name is Efrat,I'm 16 years old(11th grade) and live in Haifa. I had an argument with a friend of mine,she thinks that most people in the world prefer to study the kind of mathematics subjects like math,chemistry,physics. I was pretty mad at her because I am so not good at these subjects and I was like"wow!did you really happen to ask 7 billion people what do they prefer?" Any way,what do you guys think?is it true that people like the logical stuff? P.S:I don't know why everyone keeps telling me that math is about common sense because it doesn't make any sense to me at all.​

Just kidding. Hop in! welcome aboard! I agree with you: saying "most people prefer to study..." whatever is kinda weird. You need to go around and ask everybody (including kids in Nigeria, old Chinese farmers, albanian milkmen and Mexican philosophers and...) what hey prefer to study. If you want a bit of statistics, check out universities and you can see that most Uni students go for social sciences, humanities etc. , and Mathematics and physical sciences are way behind. Even if we add all the engineering students, there's still a sizeable majority for "non-math" disciplines. Math is not common sense. Math is logic. that's not the same thing. If you don't get it, it means you're being taught wrong, or that you have some sort of mental block that prevents you from understanding. This usually happens when you get a crap teacher in school and then you think you're "stupid in math" because you're lagging behind. "People" don't necessarily like "logical stuff". some do, some don't, some like just a little. Don't let her make you feel "out of it" just because you don't like math. Oh, and here's the most ironic thing: you're actually displaying BETTER mathematical sensibilities than your friend. She has an opinion not supported by any numbers, while you insist on getting some empirical, statistical data before believing her! So in this argument, you're the logical person and she's not. Don't forget: math isn't just about moving X's around an equation. It's also about understanding reality with numbers, You seem like you're doing a pretty good job of it. Dn't let people mess you around.​

Welcome, Efrat! You have such a pretty name (if you know what i mean..) Anyway, I think that prefering Maths over other stuff is just a question of understanding. If you're good in Maths, do well in the exams and stuff, you're naturally fond of it. I am sure there are some statics that probably investigated the general preferations in depth, but remember that you are one of a millions. You dont have to have the same general preferation just because others do Shabat Shalom

Actually most people I've asked prefer subjects like History, Literature and the likes. I am a Math lover myself, but I understand why people would prefer the former subjects. Math is something you are either naturally good at or worked hard to be, whilst History and the likes are supposedly easier, because text is something anyone should be able to learn. (However difficult it is to me...)

depends on the level, really

history in high school may be easier, but grown-up, university-level history is rather difficult, because you have to analyse the texts properly, search for meanings, trends, read critically, mistrust what you read, etc. I'ts not just memorizing dates My point is that EVERYTHING is "hard" if you do it at a high level.

I think History is difficult either way, my memory doesn't work well with that subject. However, I was really good at Civics, because it had some sort of a pattern. I hated how the History teachers always told me that you can "mathematise" History - because you can't. You can do it with Bible (at least with the way we study it) and you can do it with Literature, but you cannot do it with History. I don't care how much History makes sense, it doesn't mean it has a complete pattern to it.

your english is quite good, you have absolutely no reason to be ashamed of it in any way. i'ts good that you're sweating - it means you're working hard at improving. that's the only way to achieve good results. (it ges easier if you keep at it, don't worry) Welcome, and keep writing
