Log in, Login, Log on...

I have to go over a document in English. I have a sentence that says: "The user can log into the system". I was wondering what is the correct way to say it: 1. The user can log into the system (as writen in the document). 2. The user can login to the system. 3. The user can login into the system. 4. The user can log in to the system. Or maybe all the "in" should be "on"? I'm leaning towards number 4, but I'm not sure. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance

!none of the above

As far as I know, the proper way is "...Log onto the system". If you wish to go the Log in route, I'd go for option 1. All oter options are okay, too, apart from 3 which has two "in"s . But in this day and age, anything goes.

another question

As I understood it, log on is used when connecting to something (log on to the internet), log in is siggning in to a system (log in to gmail). Or am I wrong?

I suspect

that you're better informed than me on this subject, so I withdraw my previous suggestions and recommend that you trust your own judgement, if no-one else comes in with some authoritative information.
