Job: Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany Date: Tuesday, April 01, 2003 The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc. (Claims Conference), an international non-profit organization headquartered in New York, was established in 1951 to negotiate a program of indemnification for material damages to Jewish individuals and to the Jewish people caused by Germany through the Holocaust. This respected organization administers several major programs for the benefit of Holocaust survivors worldwide and actively negotiates with the German government. The Claims Conference has an immediate opening in our New York office for a full time staff historian. Responsibilities include: Identification and categorization of places of persecution, reviewing testimony and caseworker evaluation for historical accuracy, in depth research and evaluation of labor battalions in Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, focusing on archival research, reviewing a list of names of persecution places which are misspelled or incorrectly transliterated from several languages and determining which place is actually meant; ascertaining for places such as ghettos the time during which the ghetto was "closed"; correcting the problems in a current list of persecution places, and examining the application forms of slave and forced labor claimants from which misspelled or unrecognizable place names arose to ascertain which place is referred to. Additional Qualifications: Must have expertise in the history of Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria during World War II and the Holocaust; knowledge of labor battalions, concentration camps and other places of internment under the Nazi regime; doctorate or other demonstrated evidence of superior scholarship in Jewish history and the Holocaust preferred; ability to read German and other Eastern European languages a plus.
