The April 10 Saudi Gazette featured excerpts from a report in Israel´s Yediot Ahranot in which Israeli Officers compared the Palestinian defenders of Jenin refugee camp to the legendary Jewish resistance against the Romans at Masada almost two thousand years ago. A fortress on the Dead Sea, Masada was the site of a Roman siege which 1,000 Jewish rebeles resisted for three years, from 72-74 CE. The resistance put up by Palestinians in the northern Wesb Bank caused several Israeli Officers to liken the situations. "Jenin is the Masada of the Palestinians," said one. "They are determined not give up." With any luck, the historical comparsion will prove not entirely accurate-in 74 CE, rather than surrender to the Roman enemy, the Jewish rebels instead chose to commit collective suicide.
