Michael Jackson has been ordered to undergo a medical examination after he failed to turn up for court because of a spider bite. The pop superstar had been due to face further cross-examination yesterday in a $21 million lawsuit over cancelled millennium concerts, but was absent from the Santa Maria courtroom citing an injury to his foot. On Tuesday, Jackson turned up to the court on crutches, telling reporters that he had been bitten by a spider at his Neverland Valley Ranch - about 30 miles from Santa Maria. Superior Court Judge Zel Canter said Jackson - who is facing a compensation claim from concert promoter Marcel Avram - had offered what appeared to be a legitimate medical issue. Avram´s attorney has protested Jackson´s absence, claiming it was obvious that the star was trying to avoid cross-examination. "We´ve got an order from the court for an independent medical examination," he said. "This is the third time he has either not shown up or been late [for cross-examination]". However, according to Reuters, Jackson´s lawyers have denied the star is malingering. "Mr. Jackson is injured and needs medical attention and he´s getting it," said attorney Zia Modabber. "Today would have been his sixth day on the stand. He´s not afraid of this courtroom." As previously reported, Avram is suing Jackson for allegedly pulling out of two concerts that had been scheduled to take place in Sydney and Honolulu on the millennium. He claims the star left him with debts of over £800,000 and is suing Jackson for breach of contract and fraud. Jackson denies the allegations and said this week that Avram cancelled the shows because "the government" would not allow them to cross the international dateline on New Year´s Eve. He could not recall which government had made this ruling.
