From the Toronto Star: When a drama speaks as strongly with the voice of a generation as This Is Our Youth does, you'd be a fool not to listen. Kenneth Lonergan's play, which opened last night at the Berkeley St. Theatre in an energetic production directed by Woody Harrelson, has a lot to recommend it, despite a few flaws. Lonergan puts three young people in a room in 1982 and they suddenly become spokesmen for a time and place. Reagan is president, drugs are everywhere and the malaise is so thick you could chop it into lines and snort it until dawn. Warren has just stolen $15,000 from his father as an act of revenge. He shows up at the apartment of Dennis, good friend, drug dealer and borderline psycho. They soon come up with a scheme that involves buying an ounce of coke, partying all night and then selling the rest for profit. ******************************************* I am so excited about seeing this play. Min But the plot is not why we're here. We've come to eavesdrop on the hopes and fears of these two overprivileged, underappreciated young men and Jessica, the woman who's joined them for the evening. Despite the nearly constant smokescreen of bravado they send out and the non- stop games they love to play, we eventually come to know and understand them. Marcello Cabezas tackles the pivotal role of Warren with a guerrilla- style performance that creeps up on you over the evening. At first, he seems monochromatically nerdy, but as time goes on, we discover the shades of nuance that Cabezas can introduce. One minute you want to punch his lights out, the next you want to hold him till he stops shaking. It's a fine, subtle job. Marya Delver has the prickliest assignment of the evening in Jessica  the JAP in search of Prince Charming and although she tries hard, she's not totally successful. Granted, the playwright makes things tough for her by placing some of the script's most awkwardly blatant thematic speeches in her mouth, but she hasn't found a way to turn them into natural sounding dialogue. She is good, however, at the flirtatious, sexual side of her character, bringing the first act curtain down in sizzling fashion on a hot makeout scene with Cabezas. The showiest one of the trio is loose cannon Dennis, and Fabrizio Filippo seizes every single chance to explode that he's offered. Despite an actual foot injury that would have sidelined a less determined actor, Filippo thrashes around the stage as though Hurricane Isabel had stepped back because she knew he was in town. It would be easy to make Dennis a sexy bad boy and let it stop at that, but Filippo will have none of it. He's not afraid to erupt in vein-popping passion, being as maniacally driven as his character demands, without ever playing for sympathy. He delivers one of those star quality performances people will be talking about for years to come. The nice-looking boy has turned into a dangerous leading man. Woody Harrelson has directed with a fine sense of pace that only slackens a bit in the middle of Act II. He's also encouraged his cast to act with such decidedly un-Canadian bravura that there were times during the opening performance when you actually feared for the scenery. This Is Our Youth may be set in 1982, but its portrait of youthful disillusion still rings all too true today. This bold and ballsy production deserves your attention.
