Question: How much longer do you think it will continue? James: I've been told that this most likely is the last year. Question: What was the most challenging scene for you to do in this movie? The sex scene or anger? James: The most challenging was the stuff we shot first. The split-screen shot. It was like the second day of shooting. Question: Technically challenging? James: Yeah. Technically it was a nightmare, but it worked. That's the great thing about having someone like Roger at the helm. He had to shoot it with a motion-control camera and we literally had to time it so that we would walk down the hallway, stop, play the scene looking in the lens and then 1 minutes and 22 seconds after action, the camera would pull back, so we had to time it down to that. We had to marry Shannyn's performance, pick a take, turn around to me, and I played it with an earwig. With some directors, you think, God, this is going to take all day but on this set there was this attitude of, Alright, OK. We can do this. That was challenging? Question: Were the sex scenes challenging? James: With both the girls, honestly, it was great. They were really brave, good sports about it. They were both so cool. That can be really tricky especially if you get somebody who's not comfortable and you can't make them comfortable and then you start to worry about it. It's something you just have to go for. I was a little nervous actually because I'd met Kate (Bosworth) and she seemed really cool and very sweet and I didn't want to scare her too much. But she was great. She was a total sport as was Jessie. I have a lot of respect for both of those girls. Question: Is there a dark side to you? James: Yeah. There's a dark side to everybody. It's just a matter of how much you listen to it or let yourself counteract it, I guess. Question: Is there anything you'd change about your performance? James: No. That's pretty rare. Or maybe I've gotten to the point where I recognize there's nothing I can change so I don't even think that way. I also think it has a lot to do with how Roger put it together. At the premiere I had a great time because I was very proud of the movie. That doesn't always happen. Question: What's your natural high? You can't say acting. James: But it is. To say you can't? It's your passion. Whatever you want to do in life, if it's your goal or focus. If there's something that you care about and want to get better at and work at; that's your anti-drug and for me it's acting. Just any old hobby wouldn't do it. I think having a passion is probably the best way. Question: What was working with Roger [Avary] like? James: He's great. He's fearless. He's not afraid of what anyone else thinks of him. You just trust him. You trust that he cares about these characters. He's not standing in judgment of them or laughing at them. Especially as the writer-director, it's obvious that he really had gone there to write it. He was invested in it. You just got the sense that he kind of understood and got it. And just in terms of when somebody watches a performance too, you can tell how closely the director is watching when he comes out from behind the monitor. With Roger, you always felt so confident that he was right there with me. Question: He said you and Shannyn worked totally differently? James: Yeah. It probably worked that way. Working in television, you get proficient in all the technical aspects of filmmaking that you need to be proficient at. It just makes the job a lot easier. Where as, Shannyn completely runs on instinct. You never know what you're going to get from her. You really don't. It's like working with an animal or child. She doesn't know how to lie. You don't know what she's going to come up with and that's tremendously exciting for me to work with someone like that. It forces you to be on your toes. I had a great time working with her. Question: You said, hey, and got her back in the scene when she started laughing (on the church steps scene)? James: Yeah. She had kind of lost it because when she feels like she's lying, sometimes she freaks out. I decided to? It was just total instinct. I screamed at her. Not like, you stupid actress, how could you forget your lines but I yelled, Hey, and repeated the line and locked into her and caught her. And Shannyn being Shannyn rolled with it. And she was great. Question: Was that the take used in the film? James: I don't know. You'd have to ask Roger. I think it might be but I don't know. I know it was powerful because as soon as I did that she locked in and ran on instinct again.
