he's got 30+ years of good rep.

My employer has a Roger Dean paintings book with really nice stuff, if I'm not mistaken the front cover is the Tales cover.

casual?

Close to the Edge. The picture points a certain point in some space which is apparently Close to the Edge. What makes this picture interesting to me is the space itself. Maybe it's quite deceptive. It has its beauty anyway, again, in my opinion.

8 items added today: PONTY, JEAN-LUC ~ LIVE French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty already had a distinguished jazz career behind him when he arrived in the US to join Frank Zappa and later Mahavishnu Orchestra. After leaving MO Ponty recorded a stream of brilliant fusion albums leading his own group, which featured some of the best fusion players on the scene. His amazing technique and extraordinary sense of melody make him one othe most important players of the genre. This 1978 live recording of his group includes two of his most popular tunes: `Aurora` and `Imaginary Voyage` and is a classic recording of the genre. VITOUS, MIROSLAV ~ MAGICAL SHEPHERD Czech born bass virtuoso Vitous arrived in the US in 1966 to study at the Berklee School and decided to saty on. His brilliant jazz career spans the who`s who of jazz giants but he is best known as a founding member of Weather Report with Zavinul & Shorter. After leaving WR in 1973, Vitous recorded a series of excellent solo albums. This 1976 albums finds him surrounded by such greats as Herbie Hancock and Airto Moreira, playing free oriented fusion, producing some of the most challenging and interesting music of the genre. EARTH OPERA ~ EARTH OPERA 1st album from 1968. Earth Opera were one of those obscure US proto-prog bands that made a couple of great albums and disappeared. Coming from a folk backgroud, they embraced the (then) new psychedelic influence to the max and their debut album is an icon of its time. Some great tunes here and very good playing which make this a most enjoyable listen today. EARTH OPERA ~ THE GREAT AMERICAN EAGLE TRAGEDY 2nd album from 1969. Slightly different and more `organized` then the debut album, this one is also a better of the two. Great tunes and some excellent playing make it one of the most memorable recordings of the era. The 10+ minutes long title song is a good example of early Prog, with convoluted themes and long solos. Almost forgotten, but revived on this reissue, some great music that survived the recycle bin. CORYELL/MOUZON ~ BACK TOGETHER AGAIN 1977 reunion recording by those two fusion giants. Coryell and Mouzon were of course the founding members of 11th House in the early 70`s and here they meet again after several years of going their separate ways. The album also features the brilliat Belgian fusion guitarist Philip Catherine. The music is mostly hot instrumental fusion, but a couple of funk/soul influenced tracks creep in (Mouzon`s influence). It`s still definitely worth a listen. OREGON ~ IN PERFORMANCE 1979 live recording of Oregon, originally released as a 2LPs album. This is 75 minutes of some of the best music ever performed on stage. All four Oregon members are master musicians in every bone of their body and their skills teamed together as one organic music making organism ist just awsome. They play a selection of tunes spanning their illustrous career to that date in much extended and longer versions. This is breathtaking and spellbounding! JARRETT, KEITH ~ THE MOURNING OF A STAR After leaving Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett led two parallel groups - one in the US with the great Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman and the other in Europe with Scandinavian players Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. The US group recorded a series if revolutionay and exciting albums starting in 1971, of which this is the first (as a trio). Jarrett was still developing and perfecting his most personal style and these recordings give a fascinating glimpse at that process. JARRETT, KEITH ~ BIRTH Originating from the same session as `The Mourning of a Star`, this quartet recording presents the birth of Jarrett`s US group, which continued to record some amazing music in years to come. There is much experimentation here, with musicians switching instruments and playing quite freely, but the genious is eveident already. Challenging, but intellectually rewarding, this is a piece of jazz history. Have Fun! Adam Baruch Jazzis Web Shop https://www.jazzis.com/shop/

8 items added today: COBHAM, BILLY ~ CROSSWINDS 2nd album from 1974. After playing with Miles Davis and then with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham started a solo career, which produced a long stream of great Fusion albums in the 70`s. This album is very similar to his genious debut album `Spectrum` and features some of the best players on the scene, including the great John Abercrombie on guitar, George Duke on keyboards and the Brecker Brothers as the horn section. This is Fusion at its best, full of energy and endless instrumental virtuosity! COBHAM, BILLY ~ TOTAL ECLIPSE 3rd album from 1974. Similar in style and groove to the two previous releases with some great dynamics and excellent playing all over. The main presonell change is the Bulgarian born master keyboards player Milch Leviev replacing George Duke, who started his solo career in the meantime. This is classic fusion and did not loose any of its charm or power over the years. COBHAM, BILLY ~ SHABAZZ 4th album from 1975. This is a live recording of the group with the same personell as on the 3rd album. They play 2 new long pieces and 2 pieces from the debut album `Spectrum`. The band is in top form and everybody has ample opportunity to solo. Live fusion, when played as well as on this album, is a total musical experience! COBHAM, BILLY ~ LIFE & TIMES 6th album from 1976. After Abercrombie left Cobham`s group, the new guitarist was John Scofield, who played earlier with Miles Davis. Scofield`s distinctive style and incredible technique creates some of the most memorable moments on the fusion scene in yeras to come. This album is more funk oriented then its predecessors, but a fine level playing and some nice tunes make it a worthwhile affair. COBHAM, BILLY ~ INNER CONFLICTS 7th album from 1977. On this one Cobham returns to the `Spectrum` formula, with a big group of musicians which looks like the who´s who of US fusion. Two giutar players are present, Scofield and Steve Khan, and a large brass section and percussion section. Somewhat dark atmosphere, mixed with the powerful and energetic pulse, creates a unique sound which is quite impressive even today. COBHAM, BILLY / DUKE, GEORGE / BAND ~ `LIVE` - ON TOUR IN EUROPE 3rd album from 1976. After George Duke left the Billy Cobham band to pursue his solo career, the two players got back together in 1975 and formed the BC-GD Band. After recording 2 studio albums, they recorded this live album. The line-up is a quartet with Scofield on guitar and Alfonso Johnson on base and this band smokes! There is evrything here, from funk to pure fusion and they really can play! PASSPORT ~ LOOKING THRU 1974 album by this brilliant German fusion band. Passport`s leader is the veteran jazz musician Klaus Doldinger, who started his career in the post WWII Germany playing Dixieland, but soon moved to the modern jazz genre playing with the best musicians in Europe. He founded Passport in the early 70`s to serve as a vehicle for his numerous projects, which continued well into the 90`s. This is an early quartet version of the group with all-German line up, playing some of the best and most sophisticated Fusion ever made. In contrast to the US fusion, which was much based on funk and groove, the European variety is more about intricate interplays and complex compositions. Amazing! PASSPORT ~ CROSS-COLLATERAL 1975 album, very similar to its predecessor. Same personell and the same typically European approach to fusion, with brilliant compositions and delicate, yet sophisticated and mind-blowing instrumental delicacies. This music is totally uneffected by time and in fact perhaps even gets better with time passing by, as good wine. A must to any serious music lover. Have Fun! As you can see, we are dramatically expanding the Jazzis Web Shop repertoire. During the last 2 weeks over 70 new items were added and in the following weeks many more items will be added as well. We hope you appreciate this ever growing catalog :) 9 items added today, all by the excellent fusion group Passport: PASSPORT ~ DOLDINGER JUBILEE `75 1975 album recorded live at a cellebration of Doldinger`s 25th anniversary on the music scene. The quartet is joined by several guest musicians, including US sax giants Johnny Griffin and Les McCann and the Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine. A good time was had by all and the music soars mixing superb jazz solos with fusion rhythms. PASSPORT ~ INFINITY MACHINE 1976 album, still with the original quartet. Similar in style to the previous albums, with more great compositions and excellent playing. Passport`s ability to deliver new albums and keeping a consistent level of excellence was their trademark. They toured extensively in Europe, US and even in far and remote places, sponsored by the German Goethe Institute, which is responsible for supporting and presenting the German culture around the globe. PASSPORT ~ IGUACU 1977 album recorded in Brazil during Passport`s South American tour and including a score of Brazilian musicians, mostly on various percussion instrumets, which creates a wonderful mixture of the usual fusion with exotic rhythms and sounds. Excellent effort by the group. PASSPORT ~ SKY BLUE 1978 album, still influenced by the Brazilian experience and featuring the guitarist Roy Louis, who played on the previous album, as well as several Brazillian percussionists. It is hovever, at least partly, more consistent with earlier Passport efforts and closer to fusion then the previous album. It is also the first album to feature the new Passport line-up, leaving Doldinger as the only original member. PASSPORT ~ GARDEN OF EDEN 1979 album, which markes Passport`s attempt to create a concept album with extensive thematic approach and a richer instrumentation then usual and adding vocals for the first time. Of course this does not mean the group is going `commercial`; Doldinger is simply evolving and changing his ways of expression to avoid stagnation. PASSPORT ~ OCEAN LINER 1980 album, following the idea initiated on the previous album this is also an attempt to create a concept theme-line around a sea journey. The group is back in the quintet line-up with no additional musicians, which of course does not influence their ability to create some wonderful sounds. PASSPORT ~ EARTHBORN 1982 album. With a new keyboards player and the original drummer (Curt Cress) back, Passport deliver another collection of great fusion tunes performed flawlessly. Considering tha quality of music in the 80`s, which was really quite unbearable, they managed to stay on track on record albums without compromising the quality one iota. PASSPORT ~ MAN IN THE MIRROR 1983 album. Same line-up as on the prevoius album and similar style, with good compositions and flawless performances. However, considering the musical climate of the 80`s, the fusion was running out of steam and record labels were unwilling to release albums in the genre. All this and Doldinger`s age in view, from now on future Passport albums will be few and far apart. PASSPORT ~ RUNNING IN REAL TIME 1985 album and one of Passport`s last recorded efforts. The quintet is enforced by some additional musicians and a female singer. The music is still strong and the playing excellent, but it is obvious that there is no much future in this and the band is running out of steam, which of course is a great pity as Passport were definitely one of the best bands ever.
