This is a true masterpiece and a real shock for Focus fans, as Akkerman chose to play on this album almost only classical music using acoustic instruments, showing his mastery of the ancient lute as well as his unbelievable guitar playing. The material includes pieces from 16th century Tudor England and some original compositions. Akkerman`s cohots on this album come from the US rock scene (Tim Bogert & Carmine Appice from Cactus!), but they fill in seamlessly. The result is both intellectually challenging and full of beauty! RENAISSANCE ~ A SONG FOR ALL SEASONS 9th album from 1978. Although received badly by the critics, this album is still quite good in every respect - wonderful compositions (including the great `Day of the Dreamer` and the album epic title song), Hasslam in superb form as usual and the musicians play their hearts out. Perhaps this was slightly more commercially oriented then the earlier material, but Renaissance were such professionals that they just could not produce a bad album. RENAISSANCE ~ AZURE D`OR 10th album from 1979. This one truly is the last great Renaissance album, so good in fact that it compares well even with their best material. The songs are shorter and more structured, lacking the long indtrumental passages of the earlier albums, but the level of songwriting is superb and Annie Haslam delivers some of her greatest performances. After this one they released just 2 weaker album in the early 80`s and disappeared for almost 12 years before re-uniting again. RENAISSANCE ~ BBC SESSIONS Absolutely wonderful collection of the bands BBC recordings between 1975-1978. The material spans some of the best and well known tunes like `Prologue`, `Scheherazade` (over 25 minutes), and `Ashes Are Burning` (over 18 minutes). The band is in superb form an all of these, with Annie delivering her angelic vocals with ease and ellegance. A superb document! MCLAUGHLIN, JOHN ~ MUSIC SPOKEN HERE After his ferrocious experiments with fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and world music (Shakti), by the early 80`s McLauglin settled in Europe again (Paris to be exact - where he lived with his companion, the wonderful pianist Katia Labeque, who also plays on this album). This 1983 album captures a return to more jazzy surroundings, based mostly on the interplays between guitar and the two keyboards players. Bass gives the additional rhythm basis and there are no drums! This is most elegant, intimate and wonderful music one can imagine, always fresh and rewarding. MCLAUGHLIN, JOHN ~ BELO HORIZONTE After his move to Paris in the early 80`s, McLaughlin recorded some wonderful, intimate albums there using mostly local (French) musicians, amongst them his companion Katia Labeque and some other excellent players. This 1981 albums comprises mostly of duets and trios with various musicians, including McLaughlin`s friend Paco DeLucia, the master of flamenco guitar with whom he recorded several times before and after. WHITE, LENNY ~ VENUSIAN SUMMER 1st album from 1975. Lenny White is one of the most prominent and versatile US drummers. After recording with Miles Davis, he joined Chick Corea`s Return To Forever, where he was instrumental in developing the Fusion genre. Some of the best Fusion player take part in this recording, among them two ferrocious guitarists - Al Di Meola and Larry Coryell - turning this to an never ending battle of speed and virtuosity. The other tunes are more moody and resemble ambient music with a funk rhythm. Excellent stuff! WHITE, LENNY ~ BIG CITY 2nd album from 1977. White takes a more rock / funk approach here with two excellent rock guitarists (Ray Gomez and Neal Schon) replacing the two more jazzy guitarists on the debut album. Other guest musicians include Brian Auger, Jerry Goodman and Herbie Hancock. Also brass arrangements are used extensively, which give the album a great solid sound. There is a wide variety of moods and all in all it is a memorable album. WHITE, LENNY ~ THE ADVENTURES OF ASTRAL PIRATES 3rd album from 1978. This time without superstar guests, still White manages to creat one of the quintessential Fusion albums, with excellent playing all over and music that never rests for a second to keep you awake. This is also a concept album, based somewhat on the `Star Wars` like theme of cosmic battles, etc. There are some world music elements here as well, so truly never a dull moment. Produced by the genious Al Kooper! Essential stuff! WHITE, LENNY ~ STREAMLINE 4th album from 1978. As it seemed impossible to make anything better then White`s previous album, he changed the direction again, going more into the funky groove, with some smokin` vocal numbers (one featuring queen of soul Chaka Khan). However there is still plenty of real instrumental fusion stuff, and some absolutely outstanding bass playing by the superb Marcus Miller. ========================== There are plenty of wonderful new additions waiting for their turn.
