Let me open this month`s news with a summary of the sale offer, which dominated the second part of last month`s activities: The stock clearing sale was a great success any way one can look at it. I managed to sell over 90 % of the sale items, and the orders still pour in. From the 200 titles we started with, 120 were completely sold out and the remaining 80 titles are on stock level of 1-2 units mostly. Thank you again for your cooperation! You must have enjoyed it as well since some customers were ordering items by crates . Well the price was unbeatable and the music great, so no wander. And now to the future: After I gave the matter much thought I decided to keep the items in the SALE category at the price level of US $ 6.00 untill they are all sold out completely. I received dozens of emails from people who said they were not aware of the sale, they had no time, etc. In short, whatever is there in the sale category will stay at US $ 6.00 and I`m not bringing back the US $ 10.00 price back - good news to all of you for sure. In order to replentish the sale category, I moved about 10 items from full price to sale price and in addition here are 8 completely new items, which go directly to the sale category. Please note that the jazz items are all on the excellent German label Laika, which is known for its outstanding sound quality. =========================== So here are the new additions: AYMAN ~ DANCING WITH MY SOUL AYMAN ~ MOON SHINES LAST Born in Lebanon and living in UK, Ayman is one of the keyboards wizards of the class of Wakeman, Arkenstone, Jeremy a.m.o., who create beautiful soundscapes with a plethora of electronic instruments. What makes Ayman unique is his elegant way to incorporate Middle-Eastern motiffs into his music, which gives it a special dimention. The music is very melodic but never boring. KIRCHNER, FRANK ~ FRANK KIRCHNER German saxophonist leads his quintet through a swinging session comprising of original material written by the group with the exception of one standard. The keyboard player uses acoustic piano and synthesizers, which together with the electric guitar give the album a distinctive fusion feel in some of the tunes. KESSLER, THOMAS ~ THOMAS KESSLER GROUP German keyboard player and his trio create some real hot fusion sound on this album. Kessler uses synthesizers very skillfully and manages to produce a big and varied sound. Definitely one to check out if you like keyboards oriented fusion. KESSLER, THOMAS ~ ON EARTH This is a very adventurous album by the German keyboards player, which mixes fusion with world music. Except Kessler, all the other musicians on this album play acoustic ethnic instruments. For people with open (musically) minds! GUGGENHEIM, DANIEL ~ DANIEL GUGGENHEIM GROUP German saxophonist leads his highly energetic sextet through a program of all original music composed by himself. The pianist is no other than the famous Dutch musician Jasper Van`t Hof, and the entire ensemble swings splendidly. Modern European Jazz at its best. SIDES, DOUG / ENSEMBLE ~ SUMBIO US drummer Douglas Sides leads his excellent quintet through a series of his own compositions. The music, although quite complicated at times, flows perfectly. CAILLAT, PHILIPPE ~ STREAM OF TIME French guitarist Caillat is well know in European Fusion circles, but this album is more jazz and jazz / world oriented, with plenty of great sidemen including Tony Lakatos and Charlie Mariano on saxes. DE MADERA ~ AIRE Y CANDELA De Madera is one of the few performing Latin/Flamenco guitar duos in the United States. Currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, Juan Benavides and Jaime Ibarra have been performing and recording together for over 5 years. Their experiences as founding members of the band Fuego del Alma reconnected them with their musical roots, sparking a deep and lasting interest in Iberian and Latin-style playing. Benavides grew up in Bogotב, Colombia. Although influenced by a wide range of artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Peter Gabriel, he has been mostly affected by Paco de Lucםa. "His presence, dexterity and elegance stuck to my soul," Benavides says, remembering a televised concert of Paco he saw as a child. Ibarra, the son of a Spanish father and an Irish mother, comes from Australia. Like Benavides, his musical background is eclectic, encompassing a wealth of influences ranging from flamenco artists such as Gerardo Nתסez to western composers such as Sarah McLachlan. "I have always been drawn to those rare few artists that can take you on a journey through their music". HAKMOUN, HASSAN ~ LIFE AROUND THE WORLD As the inhabitants of this modern world move into a new millenium, age-old cultural and musical traditions seem to be difficult to preserve. Luckily,the music and traditions of the Gnawa are thriving in Hassan Hakmoun. "Life Around The World," an album of live performances, has been specifically remastered for international release. Previously available only at live shows and in a small section of the United States, the album includes several never-released tracks. Track 8, "Amontay," an uptempo powerhouse of rhythm, combines the sintir, djembe, and a drum kit with quakabeb (large metal castanets) and guitar. The opening track, "Live" features late jazz great Don Cherry on melodica & vocals. 4 excellent new Jazz SALE items added today: SIMON, EDWARD ~ EDWARD SIMON AMG Review: Edward Simon plays mostly restrained and introspective piano on this release that recalls Keith Jarrett while also hinting now and then at Simon´s Venezuelan heritage. Although tenor-saxophonist Mark Turner and percussionist Milton Cardona help out here and there, this is essentially a low-key trio date with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Adam Cruz in the post bop tradition of Bill Evans. Most of the tunes were contributed by Simon and only "Slippin´ & Slidin"´ and the tenor solo in "Teen´s Romance" (which is unfortunately faded out) generate much heat although the close interplay between the alert musicians and the consistent inner tension does hold on to one´s interest throughout. DUPREE, CORNELL ~ BOP`N`BLUES AMG Review: Guitarist Cornell Dupree has long been famous for his blues and R&B solos, so even he was surprised (and a bit apprehensive) when label head Herbie Mann suggested he record a variety of bop-oriented standards. As it turned out, several of the tunes were blues anyway (such as "Bags´ Groove," "Now´s the Time," and "Walkin´") and Dupree was free to adapt the other songs to his own style. "Freedom Jazz Dance" became a funky vamp, while "My Little Suede Shoes" was drastically slowed down and stretched out. With backing from a versatile rhythm section and occasional contributions from altoist Bobby Watson, trumpeter Terell Stafford, and baritonist Ronnie Cuber, Dupree sounds perfectly at home throughout this fine CD, even on "Manteca" and "´Round Midnight." TRIO DA PAZ ~ BLACK ORPHEUS AMG Review: No discussion of the history of Brazilian music is complete without mentioning the 1959 Brazilian film Black Orpheus, which brought attention to the music of Brazilian composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa and popularized the Bonfa classics "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orfeo." The Black Orpheus soundtrack was a major source of inspiration for Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and other key figures in the bossa nova explosion of the early to mid-1960s, and it´s also Brazilian group Trio De Paz´s primary inspiration on this jazz-oriented release, which flutist Herbie Mann produced for his Kokopelli label. Consisting of guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Dudaka Da Fonseca, Paz favors what could be called Brazilian hard bop. Though the Brazilians are quite melodic, they favor a much more intense and hard-swinging approach to the samba and to Bonfa and Jobim´s gems than Getz did in the early to mid-1960s. Subtlety and restraint characterized Getz´s bossa nova, but Trio De Paz is passionately aggressive on this excellent CD. RINEY, SAM ~ DARK HERO AMG Review: Anytime a beloved genre artist emerges from an extended layover in label limbo, it´s refreshing to see a certain measure of maturity that will help get him or her back in the mainstream. Sam Riney´s four Spindletop releases (the last in ´91) were primers for the cool soulful sax ideas currently on the airwaves, but he tended to rely too much on outsiders for great productions and material. On Dark Hero, his long overdue return to form, the saxman makes a logical leap from past to present, with a trademark mix of can´t miss mid-tempo seductions, easy funk and dreamy ballads. The big difference is, here, he´s mostly composing and pulling the switches himself, and to great effect. Alternating between the three saxes, he includes among the sure fire textures some unique touches like "Chaco Canyon," which combines industrial percussion effects with bass flute and clarinet. "Here We Go" keeps that exotic beat going, traveling East with the help of Grant Geissman´s sitar. Keeping Riney´s keen sense of romance and adventure at the forefront of the new ideas is keyboardist Mychal Lotz, who alternates between lush elegance and jazzy layfulness. ====================== As you can see I`m revitalizing the SALE items to make a substantial offer again after the big sellout last week.
