10 items added today: SHAKTI ~ SHAKTI WITH JOHN MCLAUGHLIN 1st album from 1975. Following the disintergation of his Mahavishnu Orchestra, McLaughlin surprised the listeners by forming a new group playing acoustic jazz-world fusion based on southern Indian folklore. Enlisting the true masters of Indian music (Zakir Hussain - tabla, L. Shankar - violin) McLaughlin combined his improvisational jazz based skills with the intrinsic Indian music improvisations, creating an amalgam of rare and breathtaking beauty, magic and messmerizing. The debut album was recorded live, as appropriate for improvised music. Absolutely essential. SHAKTI ~ A HANDFUL OF BEAUTY 2nd album from 1976. This time Shakti recorded their music in a studio, which of course created a different atmosphere. The group concentrates more on complex and delicate interplays rather then firey exchanges, compositions in place of extended improvisations. Neverthless it is another monster album of incredible beauty, full of sophistication and intellectual challenges. An unconditional must have for a true music lover. MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ~ VISIONS OF EMERALD BEYOND 5th album from 1974 and 2nd by MO Mk II. After the ambitious orchestral effort on the previous album, MO return to their usual format of fusion oriented material, which is softer then on earlier albums and includes some vocal parts by keyboards player Gale Moran (Chick Corea`s wife!). Jean-Luc Ponty`s violin shines as usual and the overall level of musicianship and conpositions is outstanding as always. MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ~ INNER WORLDS 6th album from 1975. By the time this one was recorded MO were in fact Mk III, a violin-less (for the first time) quartet. This means that McLaughlin`s guitar is more prominent then ever, sharing solos with the new keyboards player Stu Goldberg. No other instrumental additions (strings, brass) are added here, bringing the clean fusion sound of the group to the max. Some great tunes and exceptional playing make this album as strong again as the first two releases. This was also the last MO album in the 70`s, with one more album to be released in the 80`s. MCLAUGHLIN, JOHN ~ ELECTRIC GUITARIST 1979 solo album by McLaughlin. An exceptional effort summarizing not only his illustrous career in the 70`s, but in fact the entire jazz-rock fusion genre of that period. A pleiade of music stars and cohorts participate here in various ensembles (Jerry Goodman, Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, Jack Bruce, a.m.o.), strating with a virtual MO reunion, then moving to quartet, trio, duet and finally a McLaughlin solo guitar performance, which indicates his desire to perform as a soloist, realized later in the 80`s. Absolutely brilliant! HANCOCK, HERBIE ~ THRUST The 1974 follow-up album to the immensly successful `Head Hunters` is every bit as good as its predecessor. With Mike Clark in the drum chair the funk rhythms become more complex and the rest of the team shine on brightly as usual. Herbie`s compositions are brilliant as ever and this is a timeless recording in every sense. It complemets `Head Hunters` so well that it should always stand on your shelf side by side with it. WEATHER REPORT ~ HEAVY WEATHER 7th album from 1977 by the most popular Fusion band ever and their most commercially successful release ever. The opening tune of the album - `Birdland` soon became a Fusion anthem and is even today frequently played on the radio. Bass virtuoso Jaco Pastrious emerges as the true star on this one, supplying several timeless solos and an unprecedented groove. Zawinul`s superb compositions and Shorter`s lyricism are evident throughout and the album plays as one continuous pleasurable mind massage. Absolutely essential! WEATHER REPORT ~ 8:30 9th album from 1979 and their first live recording. The double album features the strongest WR line-up ever (Zawinul, Shorter, Pasorious and Erskine) and proves that WR were as good if not better live then in the studio. The album also includes 4 new studio tracks at the end. The energy and the virtuosity displayed here is absolutely stunning and considering the fact that WR was constantly working since several years when this was recorded, their telephatic cooperation is understandable. Essential! WEATHER REPORT ~ LIVE AND UNRELEASED Recent (2002) compilation of never previously released live recordings by WR from the years 1975-1983. Considering the fact that WR recorded only 2 live albums (8:30 and the Japanese only release Live In Tokyo), this is a most welcome edition to their legacy. It features the band in various line-ups and the material includes tracks from studio albums as well as some jazz standards. The overwhelming talent and musicianship are evident throughout and this is a real treasure. KANSAS ~ MASQUE 3rd album from 1975 by this US Prog group. By the time this album was released, Kansas already established a leading role on the US Prog scene. The album includes a stream of great compositions by the leader/guitarist/keyboardist Kerry Livgren, who has a lyrical tendency with some darkish streaks. The usage of violin creates a distinctive sound to be Kansas` trademark. The atmosphere at The Basement club is very relaxed and the players are top notch, with everybody getting ample space to solo. This is a delightful set for all blues lovers.
