Metal found in soya-based infant formula batch Wednesday, 21 April 2004 The Food Standards Agency today warned that small fragments of metal have been found in some tins of SMA Wysoy milk formula powder. The manufacturer, SMA Nutrition, has launched a UK and Ireland-wide product recall to ensure any affected tins are removed from sale immediately. The Agency has issued a Food Hazard Warning to local authorities in the UK, asking their food law enforcers to ensure the product is removed from sale in supermarkets and pharmacies. Only one batch has been affected. These tins are 860g tins of SMA Wysoy with a 'best before' date of 28/08/2006 stamped on the base. Parents who have a tin from the affected batch should stop feeding with it immediately. They can call the SMA helpline for advice on freephone 0800 212 002. They should throw the tin away, or can return it for a refund. David Statham, the Agency's Director of Food Standards and Enforcement, said: 'Potentially affected parents will understandably be concerned. 'However, the bits of steel have been easily spotted by four parents and should be too big to pass through a bottle's teat. No babies have come to any harm. 'If you are worried about your baby, you can contact your GP or health visitor.' The factory where the production fault occurred is in Ireland.
