Jay: Let’s get right to it. My first guest – an Oscar-winning actress. One of the biggest movie stars in the world if you believe these magazines. [Points out Entertainment magazine cover] Look, “The most powerful woman in the history of show business,” or something. It’s in here. She’ll blush now at that, but that’s funny. [Laughter] She’s currently starring in the critically acclaimed movie “The Human Stain” with Anthony Hopkins, and in the terrific film, “Cold Mountain,” which opens Christmas day. What a lavish film this is. Please welcome Nicole Kidman. [Cheers and applause] [Nicole enters wearing her hair half-curled and half-back with a black long shirt and white collar, also with a short black shirt with slits in the sides with black boots] J: How are you? Nicole: [Shakes Jay’s hand] Thank you very much. [Is seated] J: How are ya? N: Good, thank you. J: You know, we may have to get the nuns out here to measure that skirt. N: I know! J: It might be a little— N: I’m pulling it down. J: It might be – Oh – Don’t do anything on my account. Well, it’s good to see you. You know, I haven’t seen you in almost a year, since January. N: A year? J: That’s right. N: Well, I’ve finished a movie last night in New York. There’s a snowstorm, I think, in New York. J: Yeah, a big storm. N: Yes. But I got out and I flew straight to you. J: Yeah. I appreciate that. You flew straight to me. See, I love that, that sounds great. Because I didn’t really even get the chance to congratulate you on winning the Oscar and that was very exciting – That was wonderful. N: You said I would win it. [Cheers and applause] J: I said you would win. You made- N: I said I wouldn’t and you said I would. J: No, I knew you were going to win, and you gave a wonderful speech where you – you talked about making your mom proud, which kind of made me smile. Tell me about that, tell me about that. N: Um, uh – I suppose, you know, my whole thrust in life is to please my mother. So, I’m like still trying to desperately get that pat on the back. Um, but it was – It was sort of like – When I was 19, I um, bought my first apartment, paid cash for it. It was a tiny little studio thing, but that was given the thumbs up by her. But then I won an Academy Award and that got the thumbs up. So— J: Well, that’s good, that’s very good. [Cheers and applause] That’s why you’re in the business. N: huh – yeah. J: It is— N: She’s the one who’s got it. She’s got it on her – above her fireplace. [Laughs] J: Oh, is that right? N: Yes. J: Oh, that’s cool, that’s great. N: So the neighbors can come and touch it. [Audience laughter] Yeah. J: And what did they see for you when you were like 13, what did they – did you want to be an actress then? And they were like “Oh my gosh, can’t you be realist?” N: Yes. They thought it was going to be a disaster. J: Oh, really? N: Oh yeah. In Australia, if you say “I wanna be an actor” – There isn’t really the film industry or the theater industry to support that. I mean, so many actors are unemployed. So, it means that you’ll be living at home and constantly coming and asking for money. [Laughs] So I think that’s what they projected. And they’re both academic— J: Really? N: So they were like “No you’ve got to go and become a doctor or a lawyer.” J: Did you even consider that? Even for a minute? N: Oh, yeah, I mean, I’m still considering it. [Laughs] [Audience laughter] I have a lot of respect for doctors, I’m always – If I took on another profession, I’d probably do that. J: Yeah? N: Yeah. J: You were good enough? You think you’re smart enough to be a doctor? N: No, no, not at all! {Laughs] [Audience laughter] But I’m interested, and I ask a lot of questions. J: Oh, well that’s all you have to do. N: If I ever have anything wrong with me, then I’m sort of – I suddenly become an expert on it. J: Yeah? N: Yeah! J: Do you read the books? N: Ask me a few questions! [Laughs] [Audience laughter] I’ve had a bad knee, so I know a lot about knees. J: So you know about knees, okay. N: Mm. [Laughs] I’m really— J: See, I really can’t ask about the parts I’m interested in, so we’ll move on. [Laughter] We’ll move on, we’ll move on. Now can I ask you about some silly rumors that I’ve heard? N: Oh no… J: See, I have to— N: What is it? J: This is my job, I have to ask these things. Alright, I read – and like a million people said “Find out if she’s engaged. That’s the question I got today. N: Why? J: Is there any truth to that? N: Umm... [Laughs] [Audience applause and cheers] No, no, no, I’m not. Honestly, unless I’m married again, I’m not discussing. So until I’ve gotten married to somebody, I’m not really going to say anything. J: That’s alright. Okay. N: I don’t mean to be ridiculously coy, but it’s more to do with – You know, I have two kids and I have to sort of – I just like to protect that part of my live now, because I was in a kind of very public thing for so many years. J: Right. N: I couldn’t go through that again, put it that way. J: Well, I had – Gwenyth Paltrow was here last night— N: Yes! She’s pregnant. J: She was really uncomfortable with people – Strangers would come up and go “Oh, I heard you’re pregnant and you’re this far along.” It’s kind of – she said she was sort of freaked out. I mean, does it freak you out when people you never met know about intimate personal details? N: Not really that. I just think in terms of just having some sort of things where you just have to say “I really can’t be exposed like that again.” Because you’re very vulnerable in your role, and it’s just not – I’m not – Anyway… Boring, right? J: No, no— [Some in audience claim No’s] N: Ask another question. J: Okay. N: Come up with something else. J: Alright. We’ll take a break. More with Nicole right after this. [Cheers and applause]
