Hey
i'm doing a paper about "Supervolcanos" and their claimit effects naturaly its mostly about Plinian eruptions but one thing triggers me- i've read that one of the most destructive volcanic activities the earth had known so far was actually a flood basalt it had wiped out more then 95% of all species about 250 million years ago! so how come the VEI(Volcanic Explosivity Index) dosent mention this type of activity at all? and how come these floods of lava are so deadly on a global scale? they dont trow any particles to the stratosphere like a Plinian eruption so what kind of a long term effect do they have on the earth? thanks and have a nice weekend

the point is that this event

wasn't caused by a single eruption, but by a huge number of volcanoes in chains located on the borders of the tectonic plates erupting almost simultaneously. every single eruption may have been not as impressive on the scale of biggest eruptions in history, but the effects of huge amounts of lava in the air on the global scale were poisoning the whole atmosphere of earth and blocking the sunlight for a number of months, which killed whole classes of plants and animals (and everything above them in the food chain..). the reason this thing is not in the VEI is , again, that the scale of every single eruption is not known, and probably was not outstanding
