14 items added today: BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST - BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST 1st album from 1970 by this great UK Prog group, which was one of the first to combine rock with rich orchestral textures, similar to early Moody Blues albums. Sadly the group never reached the popularity level of its conteporaries, but in retrospect this is damn good music, with wonderful melodies and great instrumental passages full of mellotron and subtle guitar solos. BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST - ONCE AGAIN 2nd album from 1971 by this group. The involvement with orchestral arrangements is developed even further on this album, with the group keeping a permanent chamber orchestra for touring and recording. Another collection of well crafted songs, brilliant playing and masterful arrangements. OREGON - MUSIC OF ANOTHER PRESENT ERA 2nd album from 1972. Oregon formed in 1970 by four brilliant jazz instrumentalists, who played together in the Paul Winter Consort, where they absorbed many non-jazz influences - mainly World Music. The group developed into one of the most important and influential US ensembles, with music reaching far beyond the expected and anticipated. The mixture of jazz improvisations and World Music themes is extremely beautiful. OREGON - WINTER LIGHT 4th album from 1974. Brilliant album by the four multi-instrumentalists who created some of the most original music ever recorded. Collin Walcott plays tabla, sitar and dulcimer. Glen Moore plays bass, clarinet and piano. Paul McCandless plays many reed instruments. Ralph Towner plays some of the greatest acoustic guitar. OREGON - FRIENDS 8th album from 1977 (and their 3rd in the same year!). By that time the group was not only superb in every aspect of musicianship, but also very prolific, producing 3 albums in 1977 and another 3 in the next year. The music is as alwas deeply intertwined with World Music, with emphasis on textures and moods. Similar to many ECM recordings of the same era. OREGON - DISTANT HILLS 3rd album from 1973. More of the same outstanding performances and deeply mooving music by the quartet, which dares to go far beyond what was considered jazz at that time with vision and prophetic dedication. This music did not loose any of its freshness and ingenuity over the years. OREGON - MOON AND MIND 11th album from 1978 (and third in the same year!). More great improvisations based on World Music themes, with plenty of opportunity for all the players to shine and dazzle, although Oregon was never flashy in nature, the music being very relaxed and introspective. This is music for the soul much more then for the body or the intellect. CORYELL, LARRY - LADY CORYELL 3rd solo album from 1969 by the young US guitarist, who by that time was already making serious waves on the jazz scene, soon to reach a superstar status among such guitar masters as John McLaughlin. This is just on the brink of the fusion era soon to follow, and here Coryell still plays in a trio format with such jazz greats as Elvin Jones (drums) and Jimmy Garrison (bass) - both of John Coltrane devine quartet. CORYELL, LARRY - SPACES The absolute classic album from 1969 on which Coryell plays with some of the best musicians on this planet: fellow guitar player John McLaughlin, Chick Corea on piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass and Billy Cogham on drums. If there was ever a definition of fusion - this is the album that does it! The guitar duets just knock you out of your socks. CORYELL, LARRY - PLANET END Another brilliant album from 1975 and a `second edition` of the `Spaces` album from 6 years earlier with identical line-up. Sequel albums usually stink, but this one is a great exception to this rule, stunning and as great as its predecesor. Also on this one are a couple of tracks which are the final sessions with Larry`s group Eleventh House. CORYELL, LARRY - INTRODUCING THE ELEVENTH HOUSE 1st album from 1974 by Coryell`s group Eleventh House, which also included the talents of Randy Brecker (trumpet) and Alphonse Mouzon (drums). This group was in many aspects a follow up to the McLaughlin`s Mahavishnu Orchestra, with the same vigor and virtuosity. The absolute embodiment of the fusion genre and brilliant music all the way! VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR - GODBLUFF LIVE 1975 (DVD) Recorded in France in 1975, this captures the classic VDG line-up on tour. They perform the entire `Godbluff` album with their unique levels of intensity. Hammill vocals are extravagant as usual and the entire concert carries an atmosphere of suspense and magic. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 60 minutes. FOCUS - LIVE IN AMERICA (DVD) Newly re-formed Focus captured live during their US tour. Still led by the energetic (but fatter) Thijs van Leer and without Jan Akkerman, but this group can play the hell out of any competition. The material comes from their new (2002) album, as well as as all the favorite tunes from their 70`s albums. Great music refuses to die! Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 90 minutes. BRUCE, JACK - LIVE AT THE CANTERBURY FAYRE (DVD) Jack Bruce is still one of the best players and musicians around and far from being a forgotten rock icon. This live recording from 2002 proves that he can still play a mighty bass and lead a great ensemble of fierce musicians.
