I finished an essay for school

Well, at first I had to express my opinion about "book tasks" (which is what people call book reports these days). That's my answer: I am very sceptical about book tasks, not only because their general lack of popularity. Most students are not overwhelmingly enthusiastic about home work in general and book tasks in particular. This has very little to do with reading books. Reading books can be very enjoyable, and I don’t consider it as an arduous and boring occupation. The duty to write about the books in order to do well at school is sometimes soul-destroying. Suddenly the thrilling plot and the highly interesting characters turn into cold analyses. To conclude, the institution of book tasks has acquired its notoriety fairly and squarely.

And then...

I wrote an essay about the topic "Do books belong in the last generation?" Here goes, I'll be awaiting your replies, remarks and corrections. It is obvious that the so called “last generation” have not invented book reading as a principal cultural pursuit. After all, the previous generations have contributed their share, not only in producing books, but also in reading them eagerly and discussing it within the educated circles of society. Undoubtedly, today’s generation is less inclined to read, and faces several alternatives to acquire information, interpretation and commentary and even to enjoy the graphic side of literature without actually reading. The existence of these alternatives is a fact, is part of progress and can’t be stopped by administrative means. Even gentle brainwashing which is sometimes called “education” is not likely to be effective in encouraging young people to read. Literature will have to compete with television and with computers by improving the presentation of the books and perhaps penetrating the electronic media. Nevertheless, the above mentioned recommendations and even the successful integration of literature with the electronic media will not change the fact that the traditional way of reading books as a main mark of belonging to the educated society is declining.

a few suggestions

Note: If it was anyone but you, I woudn't have touched this, because there would have been no need to. My suggestions are editorial in nature, relating mostly to style rather than mundane grammatical errors etc. It is obvious that the so called “last generation” HAS not invented book reading as a principal cultural pursuit. After all, PREVIOUS generations have contributed their share, not only in producing books, but also in EAGERLY READING and discussing THEM within the educated circles of society. Undoubtedly, today’s generation is less inclined to read, and faces several alternatives FOR acquirING information, interpretation and commentary and even the graphic side of literature without actually reading. The existence of these alternatives is a fact, is part of progress and can’t be stopped by administrative means. Even THE gentle brainwashing METHOD sometimes REFERRED TO AS “education” is not likely to be effective in encouraging young people to read. Literature will have to compete with television and with computers by improving the presentation of the books and perhaps BY penetrating the electronic media. Nevertheless, the above-mentioned recommendations and even the successful integration of literature WITH electronic media will not change the fact that the traditional way of reading books as a main mark of belonging TO educated society is declining.

I got a 100 ../images/Emo6.gif!

My teacher (who is usually disgusting, seriously is, you have no idea how awful she can be) said it was superb, and that it's one of the better essays (by one of her students, of course) she read. I'm so happy
