Fan Fiction

Are you in 'it'? What are you reading? What are your favorite sites? Ships? Share!!
I'm a big Harry Potter fan, ships: HG, JL, I have no problem reading RLNT, NLLL, RHr as long as it's not the main ship.... My favorite sites are SIYE and ff.net and WT I read any rating (yeah, including Rs and NC-17s)...and :) that's it. Once I tried to stay away from the Harry Potter thingi, so I tried to read Titanic fics, I read one where Jack stayed alive and he and Rose had twins, guess what their names were? James and Lily. Yep, ever since, I know Harry Potter and I are destiny!

:Fanfiction

I consider Fanfiction a very important part of my life and a very very important part of my English. I used to read a lot and that really helped my vocabulary and my writing. For anyone who knows a little about Fanfiction this is probably going to seem strange (
) but the only ship I read is LJ (or JL). What can I say, I have a thing for love/hate stories.
In my defence, I'd like to state that not all I read is sappy love stories and I don't have a problem reading AU fanfiction which aren't so cliche (it seems to me that a lot of people consider this ship to be very sugary, mushy and predictable. I think it mainly depends on the writer). Favorite sites? Fanfiction.net, because I know that even though there is a lot of trash there, there are actually some good things too.

fan fiction for me

i don't like it. i prefer reading original works rather than the fan works..anyway, lots of people say that reading in english improves their vocabulary and i think it's stupid. reading in english improves your style and nothing but it. i mean, do you actually search in the dictionary the meaning of a word which you don't know?! you just keep reading. i do read books in english but just for fun and to improve my style :)

That's not true.

Reading enough in any language will improve you vocabulary, because you don't necessarily have to go and search the dictionary in order to learn a new word. you get it's meaning from the context. After a few time you read a word used in a sentence you understand, you will remember it's meaning. I see it happens in Hebrew - I used to read a whole lot and my vocabulary is much bigger then any of my classmate's. they always come to me whenever they don't know a word - and keep in mind, it's Hebrew, so in order for them not to know a word it has to be a really big word.

I hate fanfiction ../images/Emo3.gif

I mean, It's not that I have a problem with it's existence, I just don't wanna read any. Ever. You see, I believe that since the original author put thought and effort into his story and characters, it's not fair to take them and start playing with them, changing them and twisting the story to match you desires. I mean, it's not even a different interpretation of the story - which is somthing acceptable - it's simply changing it, or adding stuff too it, stuff that obviously aren't supposed to be there. A I don't think it's right.

I have a few stories there

It's a really big site so I can understand why you didn't like it. I can get lost there and sometimes it gets annoying, but there are a lot of great stories...

First of all

For all the people who aren't into HP fanfics, what do all these initials stand for? As for fanfic, I used to read fanfic about Xena: Warrior Princes. And even more importantly, I wrote quite a lot of Xena fanfic. I was even a part of a project which created a virtual 7th season. Now I want to answer some of the other people who responded to this thread: 1. Reading does improve your vocabulary, even if you can't grasp it. There are so many words that I realize I know and I don't remember ever looking them up or making an effort to learn them. It's called a passive vocabulary. 2. I don't think it's unfair to authors to write fanfics. They say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". And in any case, it's only recently that people started insisting on originality. The Greeks all wrote about the same stories from the Greek myth. Shakespeare took the plots and characters for the majority of his plays from existing plays. I don't see it as a bad thing, especially if it is made clear that it's fanfic. Fanfic writers are dreamers and fantasies fulfillers. They write about things that they and others from the same fandom want to see or read but can't, because these things aren't said in the original work or are simply implied, or because the creator of the original left gaps that are screaming to be filled somehow. Having said that, nowadays I don't read fanfics because I have so many other things to read and I don't have the time or the drive to try sifting through all the junk to get to the pearls (that's the problem with things that people just publish online, without any editing or people making decisions what's publishable and what isn't). Also, since Xena I haven't felt too passionate about anything. I mean, I like HP very much, but I don't feel that the HP fanfic could add something to my experience of reading it. If I decide to invest time in HP it would be to read the first 6 books again.

I think the correct

term is "into" it. And yes, of course (see signature). I read several fandoms, amongst which: HP, SG-1, SGA, DS and TS Apart from HP I'm usually an OTP-er. The mere thought of Ray/Ray (for example) gives me the chills. Favourite sites and fics, mostly in HP fandom, here: אופיום להמונים (anyone who wishes to contribute is most welcome) My own fanfiction: הגנזך

I was, now a lot less

Once I was into Westlife... I started reading regular fanfiction about them, even started writing something which was (and still is) really bad. Then one day I accidentally came across a slash story, and the rest is history. I suppose most of the sites aren't online or changed their address since Westlife aren't what they used to be. Eh, those were the days... About learning - I DO feel that reading FanFiction expanded my vocabulary. The best example I have is the word "sheepishly". It was used in so many stories I had to look it up. I used it today, actually
. Other than that, if you read and then started writing (which I did), you'd find yourself using things you've read, and obviously you can't do that without understanding. I agree with the Moon Goddess, I can speak pretty much fluently and I don't remember ever actively learning all these words. Good things I wanted to make sure your age... This Kian photo is one of the best
