Action Alert - Support Daniel Pipes Nomination On Wednesday, July 23, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will consider the nomination of Dr. Daniel Pipes to serve on the Board of the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP). Dr. Pipes is one of this country's top scholars of Islam and the Arab world. He is a Fellow of the Jewish Policy Center and an insightful and eloquent analyst of current events and trends in the Arab world. The USIP was created by Congress to promote the peaceful resolution of international conflicts. The President appoints the members of its Board of Directors, who must be confirmed by the Senate. There is a strong campaign underway in opposition to this nomination, most notably on the part of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an organization which Dr. Pipes and Steve Emerson have linked to the support of radical Islamic organizations. President Bush has expressed his confidence in Dr. Pipes by nominating him to serve on the USIP board. The RJC fully supports this nomination and we ask you to take a few moments to let the Senators on the committee know of our support. A phone call or faxed letter are the best ways to register your opinion. (E-mails are welcomed only from constituents; postal mail gets delayed due to the anthrax attacks.)
