60 k from Sudan
hi there. Yesteday flight was to a holl name kitgum about 60 km south of Sudan, midel of the war zone with the LRA. I had to take there couple passengers and then hang around the aircrft till they done with their meating and then drop them in anther gost town up north and then on my won head home to Pardise Kampala. I never been in Kitgum so I did not know what to expect, at this part of the world we dont have all the loxcery the pilots have in first world countries like briefing, airport info. manuals etc, all I had is the aproximate elevetion, RWY heading, GPS waypoint and a remark says BEWARE"!" (this is not a joke!) one of our passengers was seating with me at the front of the C210, he was a lacal guy. we were still 100km out and I could see the area is coverd with dust cloud from the Sudanis dessert, first time flying in to this destination on a C210 and the weather is not co-operting, anther day in the bush. I pendret in to the dust and the visibility drop from 80 - 90 km to 5 km, that was the line, if the visibily will drop ferther I will then head to my alternate airstrip and I will feel realy sorry for my passengers for not making thier meating on time if at all.. when we arive at the waypoint on the GPS in the middle of the "town" I look down and hardly believe I see a dirt roud full of cows, gouts local people and trucks, I asked the guy seating next to me, "you said you have been here before, didnt you? is this the airstrip???!!!" "yes"he answerd. "ok then, this is not going to be easy"! 500 feet AGL (above ground level I did 2 cercls to with the landing gear down and landing light on, to let know this big zoo villge I am landing so bugger off my dirt roud airport intl Kitgum"" then I bazzed the dirtroud at 20 feet to clear the rest of the stuberns...(must say that crop dusting training realy pays off in a place like Africa() I did a tear drop over the other end of the RWY and then land North bond. shortly after I shut down and the strip became zoo again with cows and trucks. then a yung lady come over and ask for 16,000 shilings (about 9 $) for landing fee. a day in Africa hopping you dont mind I shere all this, sorry for poor speling.
