Problem: Password Problem: Resetting password Fix: Follow these steps to reset the switch to its default password by using CLI (Command Line Interface): 1. Connect a serial cable to the serial port of the switch. The cable pinouts can be found at: Cable Pinouts (from the index on the left side of the screen click on the link "Pin_outs") 2. Launch the Hyperterminal application and set the speed for the connection for 9600. Leave all other settings as default. 3. After hitting the Return key several times you should see a login screen Note that the same menu can be accessed via telnet over the LAN after the switch is given an IP address and subnet mask 4. Type at the command prompt: "telnet [valid IP address]" 5. the login username and password are by default : user name: admin password: [empty] 6. At the Top-level menu, enter: system password The following prompt is displayed, allowing you to enter the existing password: old password 7. Enter the existing password (you must type now the existing password) The following prompt is displayed, allowing you to enter a new password for the current user: 8. Enter the new password (Passwords can only contain alpha-numeric characters.) The following prompt is displayed, allowing you to re-enter the new password as confirmation: 9. Retype password: (you must re-enter the new password) 10. A message is displayed informing you that the password has been successfully changed. Fix: To reset the Switch to the default password using the Web Interface, follow the steps below: 1. Connect to the switch using a web browser on your LAN. Instead of the URL type the IP address of your switch. A login screen should appear. 2. Log in using the default user name and no password. 3. You can then change the password using the Password Setting page. To access the Password Setting page: - Click the Management Settings icon on the side-bar. - Click the Password Settings hotlink. - the Password Setting page is now displayed. 4. In the Password Setting page you must fill in the following fields: - "New Password" which allows you to enter a new password for the user. Note that the password can be up to 10 characters long. (Passwords can only contain alpha-numeric characters.) - "Confirm the Password" which allows you to re-enter the new password. The password does not change unless you re-enter it in this field. N.B. It is a good idea to write down the new password and keep a copy in a separate, secure place.
