The Subject: Finding A Needle In A Haystack: Aliyat Hanoar Files 1946 - 1949 For Children Coming From Europe The Speakers: Yehuda Witenoff and Eva Floersheim Old Aliyat Hanoar files are kept at the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem, but they are more like raw material and not easy to use. Out of the need of child survivors of Holocaust to find any small piece of information about themselves in some of those files, and through the initiative of the late Erela Goldschmidt and Tali Hadar, relevant files were copied and brought to the Galil Genealogical Society. Eva Floersheim then sorted the raw material of around 4000 documents into two main groups: 1) Documents with names of children as they were still in Europe, arranged according to country, place and institution, roughly covering the years 1946 – 1949; 2) Documents showing on which ships the children were brought from Europe to Haifa, arranged according to the name of the ship, roughly covering the years 1946 – 1949. These files are at our library in Tivon. Yehuda Witenoff took this material one step further - he has entered all the data of the Ship Files on Excel to make any search easy and convenient. He is now working on the Europe Files despite the difficulty of making so many different kinds of lists into one searchable document. Yehuda and Eva would like to tell more about this material and show some of the ways it has been used with success. You can indeed find a needle in a haystack! At 18:00 the library will be available to all members and other participants for perusal until the start of the meeting.
