The last bunch of new additions for this month includes 5 more fusion and jazz items: MUHAMMAD, IDRIS ~ MY TURN Idris Muhammad was a legendary drummer in the 70`s as the participant on countless soul / jazz recordings, especially those on the CTI label. This is his debut album as a leader with a stellar cast which includes Grover Washington, Randy Brecker, Hiram Bullock a.m.o. The music includes some instrumental and some vocal tracks, definitely on the lighter side of fusion with a strong soul / funk inclination. STIEFEL, CHRISTOPH ~ ANCIENT LONGING German keyboards player Christoph Stiefel is a perfect representative of the new generation of European players - gifted, well educated and with strong ties to the jazz tradition. This quartet recording with Charlie Mariano (sax), Peter Erskine (drums) and the great bass player Dieter Ilg is a pleasure from the first tone to the last. He also composed all the material performed here. LAKATOS, TONY ~ DIFFERENT MOODS Hungarian saxophonist Tony Lakatos is already well known as one of the major modern jazz players today. He performed with all the jazz superstars and his solo recordings are all exceptional. This is a sextet album with Terri Lyne Carrington (drums) and Anthony Jackson (bass) - an exceptinally vibrant and gifted rhythm section. Peter O`Mara contributes some superb guitar and the entire album jusk kicks! MEEK, GARY ~ GARY MEEK Saxophonist Gary Meek is well known in the world / fusion circles after playing with such notable musicians as Airto Moreira, Flora Purim and Jeff Lorber. They all return a favor and take part in this - his debut album as a leader. The music is a nice example of world / fusion including excellent examples of Brazilian and other folk motives intertwined with jazz rhythms. Great musicianship all the way! VILLMOW, MICHAEL/KBB ~ N German guitarist and band leader Michael Villmow is well known in the European jazz circles. This is an excellent fusion album with his KBB (Koln Big Band - not to be confused with the Japanese fusion group KBB!), which is a rather unusual approach to fusion involving an entire Big Band. We start the October additions with 6 jazz and fusion albums: NIMSGERN, FRANK ~ FRANK NIMSGERN Frank Nimsgern is a well known and respected German bass player, who played on many fusion / funk albums. On his debut album as a leader he collected a great group of musicians, including Billy Cobham (drums) and the mighty Chaka Khan on vocals. The material is mostly funk oriented with some excellent performances by all the participants. MATERNA, PETER ~ AQUARIUS German saxophonist Peter Materna is a leading modern-jazz figure in his country and quite well known outside its borders. This recording with his quartet showcases his excellent improvisational qualities as well as his talent as a composer (he wrote the entire material). All members of the quartet are very accomplished musicians and especially worth mentioning is the lyrical piano of Martin Scholz. MATERNA, PETER ~ JAZZ CONTRACT This excellent modern-jazz quartet led by saxophone player Peter Materna represents well the incredibly high level of the young generation of European jazz players, who not only have flawless technique, but are also able to compose memorable melodies. The music sounds familiar, yet has enough unique characteristic to be interesting and even challenging at times. WENIGER, PETER/NUSS, HUBERT ~ HYMN TO GOBRO This excellent German quintet fronted by Peter Weniger (sax) and Hubert Nuss (piano) plays some excellent modern-jazz, which is in every respect as good as anything performed by much more familiar names. These relatively young musicians know their turf perfectly and show it every inch of the way. The material is mostly composed by the quintet members with just two standars by Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter. FINKEL, SIGI/SPECIAL STATION ~ SWEET SUE Austrian saxophonist Sigi Finkel, who is very well known on the US scene, surrounded himself with some of the best know musicians to create his debut album: John Abercrombie (guitar), Enrico Rava (Trumpet), Ed Schuller (bass) a.o. The result is some of the most refreshing modern jazz / fusion music recorded in a long time. All copositions are by Finkel and they all swing and drive! PRIME CRIME ~ ANIMAL RITES Prime Time is an ensemble comprised of US, South & Central American and European musicians playing what is commonly known as salsa jazz, a fusion of jazz elements with those pulsating salsa and funk rhythms. You just can`t listen to this music and stand still - your feet move as if moving on their own. The playing is excellent all over, with spicey solos and driving percussion pushing ever faster. ========================= This month the Jazzis Web Shop celebrates its 3rd anniversary!
