In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece (Greek: Χρυσόμαλλον Δέρας) is the fleece of the winged ram Chrysomallos (Χρυσόμαλλος). It figures in the tale of Jason and his band of Argonauts, who set out on a quest for the fleece in order to place Jason rightfully on the throne of Iolcus in Thessaly. The story is of great antiquity – it was current in the time of Homer (eighth century BC) – and consequently it survives in various forms, among which details vary. The animal described in the mythology is probably the Golden or Mishmi Takin. The Takin is a goat-antelope found in the Eastern Himalayas. There are four subspecies: B. taxicolor taxicolor, the Mishmi Takin; B. taxicolor bedfordi, the Shanxi or Golden Takin; B. taxicolor tibetana, the Tibetan or Sichuan Takin; and B. taxicolor whitei, the Bhutan Takin. Mitochondrial research shows that takin are related to sheep, its similarity to the muskox being an example of convergent evolution. The takin is the national animal of Bhutan. One can find the Takin in san-diego, Illinois or Helsinki zoo, but in the wild it almost can’t be found. When someone told me about a Mishmi Takin captured when his mother got killed and he is kept in a village in Dibang-Arunachal I had to see and photograph him. Since people are using picture from the net without permission I had to add my signature on the center of the pic – sorry.
