California State University Dominguez Hills and the Orange County Department of Education now offer the entire graduate level Assistive Technology Specialist Certificate Program online during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. All of the courses offered meet the professional development hours for licensure renewal as required by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. The Summer 2002 semester starts June 3, 2002. SPE 530: Introduction to Assistive Technology reviews the use of Assistive Technology as it relates to education, communication, vocation, recreation, and mobility for individuals with disabilities. Explores types of assistive technologies, functional assessments, resources, and school district responsibilities in providing assistive technology devices and services to school-aged individuals. The next class is scheduled to start on June 3, 2002 and end August 16, 2002. SPE 531: Basic Assistive Technology provides information regarding design and development of basic assistive technologies. It will discuss differences between human performance and system performance as well as provide information on the types and development of a variety of assistive technologies and functional assessments. The next class is scheduled to start on June 3, 2002 and end August 16, 2002. SPE 532: Advanced Assistive Technology will provide opportunities for students to learn how to use and adapt a variety of assistive technology devices and software. Participants will learn how to present and/or apply these technologies to a variety of consumers including, students, teachers, administrators, and parents. The next class is scheduled to start on June 3, 2002 and end August 16, 2002. SPE 533: Administration of Assistive Technology Services provides information on a variety of administrative issues including: Policy Foundations, Staff Development and training issues. Functional assessments and the role of the Transdisciplinary Team, the identification of funding and other resources, legal and ethical issues and effective program evaluation techniques and procedures. The next class is scheduled to start on June 3, 2002 and end August 16, 2002. SPE 537: Capstone Course in Assistive Technology provides students with opportunities to identify the skills necessary to be an effective assistive technology specialist, such as, performing functional assessments, developing appropriate goals and objectives, and selecting relevant assistive technology devices and services for the disabled within a comprehensive service delivery system. The next class is scheduled to start on June 3, 2002 and end August 16, 2002.
