Keeping Things In Perspective Kelly sold 236,000 singles with an average of 11 million viewers during season one for a first week conversion rate of 2.14%. Ruben sold 286,000 singles with an average of 22 million viewers during season two for a first week conversion rate of 1.30%. Clay sold 392,000 singles with an average of 22 million viewers during season two for a first week conversion rate of 1.78%. Fantasia sold 142,000 singles with an average of 24 million viewers during season three for a first week conversion rate of 0.59%. Kelly - 2.14% Clay - 1.78% Ruben - 1.30% Fantasia - 0.59% Not even Clay, with his demented fans buying 10 and 20 copies apiece so that he could "beat" Ruben, could match Kelly's numbers from season one. And just imagine how many Kelly would have sold had Justin also released a single on the same day as Kelly so that the Kelly fans would have been motivated to buy extras. I'm guessing she would have sold about 300,000 or so. That would equal a conversion rate of 2.70% -- almost as much as Ruben and Clay put together. Oh, and as far as The Best Contestant Ever goes... well, I'm not even going to comment. Controlling for audience size, and assuming 22 million viewers: Kelly sells: 472,000 (with no competition factor) Clay sells: 392,000 Ruben sells: 286,000 Fantasia sells: 129,800 If you want to look at total album sales to date: Kelly: 11 million viewers - 2.0 million sold = a conversion rate of 18%. Ruben: 22 million viewers - 1.7 million sold = a conversion rate of 7% Clay: 22 million viewers - 2.6 million sold = a conversion rate of 11.8% Note: Ruben and Clay's numbers are both inflated (in comparison to Kelly's) due to both of their albums being released during the Christmas shopping season. Even that huge extra advantage is not enough to bring them anywhere close to Kelly's 18%. Heck, if Kelly had 22 million viewers the first season, she would have sold 4 million albums and shipped 5 times platinum by now. And if someone wants to claim that a lot of Kelly's sales are not to her AI audience, that they're in fact to people who never watched her on AI -- well, that's okay with me. That just means that Kelly appeals to a non-AI audience and has done a much better job at converting her non-AI audience than any of the others. When you look at the numbers, it becomes pretty obvious who the most popular (and most talented) contestant ever to appear on American Idol is. By the way, this post is not meant to put down any of the other idols (they're all successful). It's just meant to point out Kelly's immense superiority to everyone else from the show. Of course, it's not a competition and sales don't mean everything. I'm just saying...
