31/12/97 יום לפני הפסקת האזנות בתדר 500KHZ קראה אניה בשם OAK במרחק מה מחופי אירלנד, קריאת מצוקה במורס. המפעילים לא האמינו למשמע אוזניהם ובהתחלה חשבו שמדובר בבדיחה (צינית משהו) לקראת סיום האזנות בתדר 500 קה"ץ שהיה מתוכנן למחרת ליום 1/1/98 בכל התחנות הבריטיות. למיטב זכרוני לצוות שלום - הם נאספו ע"י ספינה אחרת.

SOS הן לא ראשי תיבות, למרות שחבל לקלקל סיפורים יפים עם עובדות. המקור החל בועידת תקשורת ימית (ITU) שחפשה בתחילת המאה קוד מורס מתאים שיאפשר שני דברים: - יהיה צרוף מאוד בולט בתקשרת מורס הוא משודר כיחידה אחת (...---...) וזה אכן סימון צורם ומצמרר לכל אלחוטאי מורס. - שיהיה אפשר לסמן אותו גם באותות קוליים (בתותח - הכי קרוב יהיו שינויים במרווחי הזמן). למיטב זכרוני לפני שנת 1910 אושרה ההחלטה. ואכן הוסיפו לאלחוטן של הטיטאניק להוסיף לקריאת ה CQD גם SOS.

Read buttressed his arguments with hundreds of citations from newspapers and other documents of the period...the fad began in Boston in the summer of 1838...Many of the abbreviations were exaggerated misspellings which were a stock in trade of humourists of the day. One predecessor of OK was OW "oll wright", and there was also KY "know yuse"...Most of the acronyms enjoyed only a brief popularity but OK was an exception... Democratic supporters of Martin Van Buren adopted it as the name of their political club, thereby giving OK a double meaning ("Old Kinderhook" as Van Buren was known, was a native of Kinderhook, NY). OK became the warcry of Tammany hooligans in New York... and was mentioned in newspaper stories across the country...by the time the campaign was over, the expression had taken firm root nationwide
