The chimney effect (also called "buoyancy" or "stack" effect) is based on the natural tendency of the air to move from high to low pressures (natural ventilation). The warm air rises naturally, producing air movement through the building. The existence of a chimney is increasing this effect for the following reasons: Due to the lower effective section, the air speed is accelerated in the chimney. Consequently, the pressure is lowering in this section (principle of energy conservation - Venturi effect). Due to the higher difference of pressure, the air movement is accelerated.
