Work: ===== Normally, the best way to find a professional job is via a specialised job agency; the reason is simple: the employer relies on the agency to do the initial selection, weeding out most of the unsuitable candidates. Therefore, your partner can send his CV to various agencies. He should include a local telephone/mobile number. If one of the agencies is interested, or has a job for him, they will call him, or send a txt msg, and a very short notice, requiring his attendance at various interviews, so it would be awkward to say the least... It is also possible to approach some employers directly, as some are quite happy to advertise directly, bypassing the agencies. It is essential to describe the current job and any qualifications in terms that would be familiar to UK employers, so before sending the CV out, try to get somebody from the UK to see a draft of a CV... [different countries can use different terms to describe the same job; use the incorrect term, and you flash a warning signal to a prospective employer] Admin jobs: the same applies- use agencies and try to describe your experience and career in terms that would be familiar to a local employer.Get someone from the UK to go over it- same as above. Generally, the older you are, the more relevant your work experience is and your study records are less relevant. It is difficult to comment on salaries; your partner should be looking through the web, and for Admin work- there is so much of it; however, general Admin jobs do not pay that well- around £20-25,000. Accommodation: ============= North London is where the Jewish community live; from Regents Park up to Stanmore in a sort of a 'fan' spreading narrowly around the area - Swiss cottage, hendon, parts of mill hill, golders green and hampstead, stanmore and Edgware and so on.: however, rents are relatively expensive, in London, a good area can be street-specific rather than area-specific; in other words, you have to see the area for yourself before committing yourself to renting or buying. my own preference is to find a job first, and then find a place to live, because commuting in London can be expensive, and you can base you choice of an area to live on how easy it is to get from there to work. Bureaucracy: ========== UK Border agency has all the info, and it is easy to understand and follow. Use their website, and, if you can, apply for the necessary permits while you are still in Israel- before you go. National Insurance: ============== google on 'how to obtain a national insurance number': http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/BeginnersGuideToBenefits/DG_10014073 so the same for 'how to register for a local GP', 'how to find a local GP' [doctors] Open a bank account: ================ google on 'how to open a bank account; HSBC offers a "passport account"- but it costs money- and you have to have the account and pay the fee for one year, then you can open a domestic current account with some other bank- with no fees. google for further info Foreigners: ========= people from Israel seems to have a phobia- probably fanned by the local media- of hostile and unwelcoming local population, or 'arabs'. This is not so, and you should not be over concerned about it. It is up to you to make the effort to integrate into society rather than the other way around; a pre-requisite- if you like- has to do with knowledge of English- to be able to use the language as a native/local would. Another is to know as much as possible about the daily routine and the fabric of society; how to go about dealing with bureaucracy, landlords, banks etc- there are lots of answers to be found on the web. I have been here in London for a long time, and I now have to time to volunteer in my local area [non jewish organisation]. we have a large mix of residents and religion had very small role to play here. Tolerance and patience would usually do the trick. In my area, a large proportion of residents are immigrants - either from other parts of the UK or from other countries, so everybody is in the same boat... Cats and dogs: ============ need 6 months quarantine- veterinary roles. You should also bear in mind that many landlords would not allow pets. google on this one as well; it will be very expensive to go through this process. Dealing with bureaucracy in Israel- before you leave? ======================================= No idea; I left Israel for good, so before leaving I simply closed down all accounts - the simplest and safest thing to do. I can tell you one thing from experience: it is very difficult to manage your financial investments from abroad. You need to keep in touch with the Israeli economy; is it really what you want to do in your spare time? regards

Thanks for the thorough reply.

Regarding bank accounts, If I'm a EU citizen, do I still need a Passport account, can't I open a normal account once I get a national insurance number? And also, will it be alright if I contact you directly via Tapuz Message system if I have specific questions? Thank you very much, Danielle

Banking

Banks and building societies demand some proof before you open an account with them-; -They want to know who you are & NI number. -A proof that you have a fixed address to which correspondence can be sent The last requirement can be met by providing utility bills sent to you at your address, council tax demand, bank statements or a copy of your tenancy agreement. Usually they want to see the last one to three monthly bills or a quarterly bill. there are variations here- some would go for one month proof of residence, a commitment to pay in a certain amount per month and a credit reference check [no good to you], some would be willing to be more flexible. This is the 'no win' situation for new immigrants- they are not in a position to prove something like that. Many landlords also want some reference - and a bank account acts as a good reference. If you want more than the facility to deposit or withdraw funds at the counter at your local [or one more pre-arranged branch], you will want a chequebook, a debit card and probably some sort of a credit card, and direct debits facility if you require them. This will not be granted unless you have a job, some sort of a credit record or some money- in short- some sort of security. So, you can certainly open a bank account- only a basic one [and it is called the basic account]- typically with what was known as a building society, where you can only deposit and withdraw money over the counter, and then upgrade to a normal clearing [cheque] account when you have a job and a place to live. why do I mention the passport account? [I do not bank with HSBC nor do I work/get a commission from of them!] The Passport Account from HSBC allows you to by-pass this tiresome procedure, and open an account that would grant you the normal facilities offered to local customers- but it comes at a price: it costs £8pm, and you have to sign up for a minimum of 1 year, after which you can change it to a normal account- or close it down, as you can find more attractive banking facilities- once you get a job and have been living somewhere for at least 3 months. Which? - the consumer organisation publishes a regular survey on 'best buy' for lots of consumer goods- and services- and banking facilities is surveyed regularly. I can assure you that HSBC does not score high in this survey... So the passport account is a good way of grabbing new customers- this is why the bank offers this service. They not only charge £8pm but pay and charge lousy rates. http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal/current-accounts/passport/everyday-banking is the link to HSBC's premier, please read carefully; the biggest advantage is that you can get the account operating before you arrive and activate it when you arrive in the UK. compare it- just as an example- to the conditions and paperwork needed to open a normal clearing account with HSBC: a normal bank account is free of charge [as long as you do not go into debit]. http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal/current-accounts/bank-account-page/apply;jsessionid=0000bpQZkTz-OeHH48sqQMmE1GD:14f64qmvd What is suitable for you? well, you can check the 'small print' for every clearing account on offer with various providers, or check some comparison websites [look through yahoo finances] or the which? website. If you arrive in London without a certainty of a job or without pre-arranging your regular accommodation [a sensible thing to do], then perhaps it would be easier for you to dish out £96 for one year - ensuring that you get some banking facilities- so you can transfer some funds from Israel, and not spend time on banking bureaucracy while you ought to be spending the time on job hunting. Your decision. Sure, you can contact me via Tapuz msgs if you wish, although I am not an 'expert' on moving to the UK... regards
