There is one former member of Gan Shmuel who is not impressed by this sort of talk. At the kibbutz no one even mentions his name, and for good reason. After moving to the far left at the end of the 1960s, Ilan Halevi took his convictions to their ultimate conclusion. For the last 20 years he has worked with the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Interviewed in Paris, he said, "Kibbutzes ? They are colonial communities based on a fundamental lie."
 
The old people are talkative - but they are reluctant to discuss the "Arab question". As they belong to the Hashomer Hatzair movement, they can hardly avoid some theoretical discussion, having once supported a binational Palestine in which Jews and Arabs could coexist. But this long forgotten generosity disappeared completely with the 1948 war. The fighting spared Gan Shmuel, but not the nearby village of Tcherkass. The Israeli historian Benny Morris maintains (8) - backed up by several eye-witness accounts - that the kibbutz helped the Hagana secret army to drive out those Arab inhabitants who had not already fled, then confiscated their land, and, three years later, destroyed the remaining houses with a bulldozer.
 
But does anyone remember ? According to Yael Paggy, "The Arabs just left. We did not drive them out." Naomi Levy agrees, and adds that it was impossible to return the land, because "it did not belong to them. Anyway, it would have caused too many problems." Gertrud Pelleg, on the other hand, remembers "feeling uncomfortable" about their departure, which reminded her "of when the Jews were deported". Joseph Kohn had no qualms about what happened. "If you start shooting you must accept the consequences." Haim Margalit, the only person to remember all the details, defends the idea that they left of their own accord with suspect vehemence. "They deny it, but they know what happened," confides Rafi Ashkenazi, one of the kibbutz managers.
 
In 1963 a young couple asked to join Gan Shmuel. But Silvia was Jewish and Rashid Arab and, in addition, he came from the "forgotten" village. As sociologist Reuven Shapira explained, "After a few months’ bitter discussions the majority refused [their application], in particular the old guard whose supposedly binational project actually excluded Palestine’s other people. Worse still, the Mapam leaders, who were always talking about fraternity between peoples, did everything in their power to block the application."
 
Coexistence betrayed
 
Unlike the events of 1948, this dispute has not been buried deep in the collective subconscious, but continues to cause trouble. The vast majority of kibbutz members regret the decision. For Rafi Ashkenazi, "Gan Shmuel betrayed its ideal of coexistence between Jews and Arabs", a view shared by many of the young people who were in their twenties at the time. But others are unrepentant. For reasons that he claimed as "personal", Haim Margalit played down the importance of the refusal. He found Rashid "unsympathetic". But Shoshana interrupted him. "It was not a personal, but an ideological problem. By refusing Rashid, we gave way to the paranoia of people who will do anything because it supposedly enables the Jewish people to survive." As if to prove the point, Sara Kair insisted, "I was against the application and I still am, for fear of creating a precedent." Oddly enough, she is delighted by the success of mixed couples involving goy (Gentile) volunteers, from Scandinavia.

יהודים יכולים לחיות בהם? דרוזים וצ'רקסים יכולים לחיות בהם? אפילו בנצרת שהיו גם ערבים מוסלמים וגם ערבים נוצרים דחקו את רגלי הנוצרים שבורחים אל היהודים בנצרת עלית כי האחים המוסלמים שלהם מתעללים בהם.
אכן באמת לא מבין מה היו הטענות על המצע של רחבעם זאבי הי"ד, זאת מדיניות המדיניות שמיושמת כלפי הנוצרים במדינות ערב, ובעיקר בלבנון וברשות הפלסטינית.

זאת לא הכוונה.הם בעצמם גיזענים ולא מקבלים אף אחד במזרח התיכון שלא כמוהם. הם הורגים כל מי שאינו מוסלמי.בכל מקרה סתוונית את מאוד לא מכירה ערבים ואת הארץ שלך. אפשר לעשות עליך ועל שמאלנים כמוך פרויקט ותוך חודש להפוך אותכם לימין קיצוני.ברור שיש ערבים טובים אבל הם מיעוט קטנטן והרוב ברברי לא נותן לחיות ולא ניתן לחיות לידו.ערבים לא יכולים לחיות ליד ערבים. הם הורסים שוברים מסריחים את הסביבה ורוצחים ואלימים
