in the UK we call it Spin
in the UK we call it Spin
Interesting article; Taken together with Doch Mevaker Hamedina, and you can read between the lines what goes on. First and foremost- public subisdy paid by the Minestry: Pls read what Doch Mevaker Hamdeina says about it. You can draw your own conclusions- I have pointed some of it out in previous mail. Then, supposed you still use their flawed subusidy model, , if the tendering system really reduced the subsidy costs, then comapare the reported figures from 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 adjusted for inflation, and you can see if privatisation really cut public subisdy costs. Then, it seems true that bus service fares in Israel are controlled directly by the govn't. But then, if you allow free for all situation, cut price competition is suicidal , as fares would be cut to the bone, and the financially weak will have to pull out. It is a favourite techique for large comapanies to cut fares so they can drive out competiton. Here lies Dan and Egged request for 'free for all'. Smaller companies will have less operating costs, so they cut prices on their services without damaging their profit. But once they reach a certain size, this competitive advantage disappear. Unions: well, one of the outcome of privatisation in the UK was a general drop in drivers wages. In fact ever since the end of the 1940s, real wages of all sorts of drivers have gone down, as driving demands less skills compared to the driver of the 1930s. This trend will now assert itself in Israel, for this is an inevitable consequence of the process of tendering on costs. applies to every other profession too. This assumes the loss of political power and public support for the workers. In the bus industry this is actually what has happend. and finally, all of the new entrants to the bus industry in Israel will not stay there if they loose money. This is the ultimate test for all the companies- including Dan and Egged. After all, bus fares in Isreael are really high. It is YOU the taxpayer that pays the price of monopolies and subsidies. So, I return to the theme of 'Spin': all sides put forward their argumments for public consumptions. as you can see the truth or objectivity lies else where. that's really what a spin is all about. regards Yoram.
