תשאלי את האפיפיור...

זה בא מהמילה cristian.. שבאה מהמילה crist.. וקיצר.. אני חושב שמשמה זה קריסטוס או משהוא... בכל אופן.. זה קשור לישו... יעני... זה כמו השם יהודית... לפי איך שאומרים את זה באנגלית... ולפעמים אפשר לדעת לפי האות שאחרי... כשh היא בד"כ סימן לס'.. ולפעמים גם i... אבל מממשש לא תמיד...

The word "Christ" comes from the Greek word for messiah ("khristos", if transcribed into Latin letters), whereas the word "Cross" comes from the Latin word for cross - "crux" - which was derived from the verb "cruciare", which means "to torture". Just to remind you, Jesus lived a bit before English formed.

hmmm.

Nowdays there are less and less rules when it comes to names. Sometimes people change the spelling just to be "original". But the traditional spelling is Christina, from Christ. There are similar names which do start with a K, like Kirsten... but obviously they sound different.
אגב (סליחה שאני עוברת לעברית לרגע) המקור הכי בעייתי ללמוד ממנו איות נכון הוא שמות של שירי ראפ והיפ הופ, מכיוון שיש שם עיוות מודע ומכוון של האיות המקובל כחלק מחוקי הז'אנר. אז צריך לקחת את זה בחשבון.

even older...

Let's just say I plan to use the term "twenties" right up to the last second. *wink* I may not be old just yet, but I'm 100% infantile. As for the English, no special background - just way too much TV... Oh, and don't worry, i'm עוגת פירות and a מקרה סל myself, so you're in good company. BTW, I know where the term basket case originated from, but I wonder how fruitcake expression was created. Perhaps it was made up by someone who disliked festive American food?

hm, well google gave me something..

Nutty as a Fruitcake This idiom comes from Luz. The meaning of "nutty as a fruitcake" is crazy or extremely strange in behavior or dress. This widely used saying started in America in the 1920's. "Nutty" was slang for crazy; a "nut" was a strange person who seemed abnormal in the way he or she appeared or dressed. Fruitcakes contain lots of nuts, so if a person is as "nutty as a fruitcake," he or she is really strange. Grooooovy Explanation, I must admit. How was basket case created ..? all I can think of is Green day's song hehe *me and my narrowminded-self* By the way, my brother is 29 and I constantly call him a Thirty year old boy. so it's more about the attitude than the age =)

wow, that's a cool explanation!

So it all goes back to nuts, huh? Nice to know. The term Basket Case comes from the following fact: in many psychiatric wards, part of art therapy for the patients used to be (and maybe still is) weaving baskets. Hence "basket case" = worthy of hospitalization. Very politically incorrect, but creative. These days there are probably newer expressions, but I like the one they had in the movie Clueless (which I only saw 15 minutes of, I think): "what's your damage?!" (accompanied by a horrified stare). Cute.

LAMO ../images/Emo6.gif Lovely =)

Rarely do I bump into current slang I like what about "ללכת בננות" ?

Hey, Noah, you sound just like

me. I'm going to turn 30 in less than a month, but feel like "I'm going on 15" too. Only difference is - when people ask I already say 30.

Good to know I'm not the only one! A friend of mine who grew up in the U.S. tells me that Americans say they're 29 even if they are 1 day away from 30. I think I like that.
