Hi GF, The answer to your question will be different depending on the Visa that you have. For example the E1 doesn´t have a time limit on the duration of stay. The E1 is indefinate and is renewable every 2 years as long as the business in the US is operational. So you can stay outside of the country for a certain period, but if you never live in the US the purpose of that visa is violated. I would not recommend to live abroad while on an E1. The H1B visa doesn´t prohibit you from living abroad. That visa is granted for a total period of 6 years. If you spend a lot of time overseas that time is not counted towards your visa and so you will be able to stay longer on your H1. As far as the L1 is concerned, they prefer the l1 beneficiary to be in the US. But since it´s a transfer visa many people maintain residence in their home countries anyway. The L1 is the fastest way to get a green card, and so once you start with that process, it´s better to live in the US full time. hope this answers the question any further questions feel free to email
