Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola´s in play. The music honcho is pushing for an early contract renewal with the Japanese electronics giant, but talks have stalled industry sources said. Meanwhile, the man behind superstars Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, and Bruce Springsteen, is said to have had offers from other entertainment companies. Mottola´s current contract expires in March, 2004. He´s believed to be one of the highest paid music execs in the world, with a salary approaching $10 million. Music insiders said the Japanese may be reluctant to commit to a hefty increase during an industrywide downturn. Sony declined to comment. "He may be demanding salary increases that are greater than they want to give," said music attorney George Gilbert. "But given the talent pool, no one who is available has the experience he has." Since Mottola took over Sony Music in 1988, sales tripled to $4.8 billion, making Sony the world´s No. 2 music giant. With the most stable management team in the industry, Mottola is credited with propelling careers of an array of divas including ex-wife Mariah Carey, and for sparking a Latin explosion with artists Ricky Martin, Shakira, Lopez and Marc Anthony. Sony Music´s operating profits last year were flat at $152 million. Its U.S. market share is No. 3 behind Universal and Warner.
