does it mean anything for the grad student?
lets put the undergrads out for a second, as here they all have to taste something from everything, in a sense, but for the grad student - does it mean that anyone who studies math also has to do something with history or philosophy, that goes beyond the undergrad super-intro level? usually not really. also, notice that in many universities that have "arts and sciences" (as college or school) the "applied sciences" are out, often law is out, buisness, IR sometimes, etc. etc. Often the name "arts and sciences" is more a relic of long lost cooperation by name only rather than a true institutionalized program
