ים! THE LAST SHOT My crew (me, Jason, Liz, Missy, Adam) arrived to the Wilmington production office on Friday afternoon, a few hours before the last shot was to take place. As I ran off, excited to greet my NC friends from last year's wrap party (Heather, Teresa, Renee, Tyson, Caleb), my LA crew took off in our van to make a "quick" check-in to our hotel. I went onto set, saw Tom, Gina, Anna, met Kevin Williamson and his assistant Jared, and saw them get a couple of shots off. Then by the time the LA crew returned, they were ready for the last shot on set. Literally, the last time the camera will roll for Dawson's Creek. So you can imagine… for six years these people have worked together, through so many challenges, to make this thing called Dawson's Creek, that they are proud of, and has probably changed their lives. And in about two minutes it will be over forever. The energy was amazing and people were giddy with excitement, but there was also a pervasive feeling of sentimentality. And if I may get a little sentimental myself for a moment… as they set up for the last shot (which I learned is called the "Martini"), and everybody was cheering, I took a moment to notice that Kevin was to my left and Paul was to my right. Here I am - a wannabe writer, last season I got lunch, this season I get to coordinate scripts, but here I am - standing beside the man who created these characters out of his own life experiences, and the man who made it a TV show for the last six years. And I suddenly was very aware of how grateful I was to be there to witness this. Greg Prange yells "Action!" and the place falls silent. The actors say their lines, as they have so many times before… and finally, and with a flourish, Greg yells the word that everybody has been anticipating. And he says it for the last time. "Cut!" Followed by the mostly-obligatory but always necessary "Check the gate", and there was whooping and applause and whistles and cheering and yes, perhaps some hugging. And then the speeches. But not the lame kind. I'm talking about the overwhelming "Am I tearing up?" kind. Right up on the set, but on the "other" side of the wall - the side that's just beige plywood and framing. Greg Prange, David Hartley, Paul Stupin. They were congratulatory, celebratory, yes - sentimental, but most importantly, they were sincere. Particularly moving to me was Paul's speech. Maybe it's because I know him and see the work he does everyday, but for a man who is full of confidence and always easy with words… it seemed as if his emotions may even have gotten the better of him as he spoke from the heart about the cast, the crew, the writing staff, the past six years, and this moment. Okay, fine, I cried like a little girl. But this show has been great to me, and the moment was so REAL… it was easy to get caught up in it. Oh, and also, during Paul's speech I may have inappropriately yelled out "Kapinos!" at Paul's mention of Tom.

האירוע בבוקר....../images/Emo105.gif

DAWSON'S CREEK DAY IN WILMINGTON The next morning, a beautiful and sunny Saturday at 11 o'clock, somehow I managed to wipe my sleepy eyes and make my way out of my hotel room to where the celebration was to be held. It was on the riverfront, and there were bleachers set up for fans and crew members, but there were overflow fans standing all around. If I had to guess, I'd say about 200 people in attendance. I found Tom and Gina sitting in a roped-off section of folding chairs, went to greet them and eventually just stayed sitting there. I'm still not sure if I was supposed to be sitting there, but wait till you hear what happened later… Anyway, "I Don't Wanna Wait" starts playing, the fans cheer, and a trolley pulls up. It's Prange, Hartley, Paul, Kevin, Sony people, WB people and the cast: Josh, Kerr, Katie, Michelle, Busy, Mary-Margaret and Nina. (James could not be there because he was doing a play in New York, but he came back that night for the wrap party.) The Mayor of Wilmington was the event's emcee, as he and others spoke of their gratitude to Dawson's Creek for putting Wilmington 'on the map'. As individual people were introduced for recognition, they would stand up and give a little wave of appreciation to the crowd. So, the introductions are happening: Executive Producer Greg Prange (stands up, waves), Producer David Hartley (stands up, waves), Associate Producer Dale Williams (stands up, waves), Executive Producer Paul Stupin (stands up, waves), Executive Producer/Showrunner Tom Kapinos (stand, wave), Head of the Writing Department Joe Ferroni ----- wait… what?! Did he just say "Joe Ferroni"?! He must have because I found myself already standing up and waving, laughing at this colossal mix-up, but I guess it's okay, because everybody who knows that I am obviously not the Head of the Writing Department was in hysterics. I wish I had been more quick to realize what was going on, because I would have corrected and deflected the recognition to it's intended target - Gina Fattore. Of course Gina Fattore. Fattore… Ferroni… I guess some list must have gotten mixed-up along the way. And just in case someone reading this is not aware, I am about as far on the employee food chain as possible from Head of the Writing Department. Adam put it best when, laughing, he said, "If I hadn't have seen it myself, I would have never believed it." I said, "I was here, and I'm still not sure that it really happened…" I would love to get my hands on one of the local news or fans' videotapes. So funny… I guess that explains why my hotel room was twice as big as the others'… Back to the speakers. Paul and Kevin were presented with 1) an oversized gold key to, of course, represent the key to the city, and 2) a watercolor painting of the Cape Fear river as seen from Wilmington. The Mayor and Paul also unveiled a street sign right there on the riverfront that said "Dawson's Creek Way". The last speaker was Mr. Joshua Jackson who gave a big heart-felt shout out to the DC crew. I'm totally paraphrasing here, but I think part of it went something like: "You are my family. I've grown up with you, in front of you and because of you…" When it was over, the cast hung around and signed autographs for the fans who were calling out their names and snapping photographs. Oh - speaking of fans… guess who has one? ME. That's right, as I wandered around, I was stopped by a fellow - I believe his name to be Donald, who said "Hey Joe, good job on the newsletter." I was quite shocked, but totally flattered that this guy a) reads the newsletter, b) likes it enough to keep reading it, and c) knew who I was and wanted to say Hi. I guess it's possible that the whole Head of the Writing Department thing that he witnessed may have made him think I was more important that I am, but I like to think that he understood I was just the Ask Joe Script Coordinator Guy and just wanted to say Hi. I'm an idiot though because I didn't get a picture with him to prove that I in fact have a real-live fan, but we did take one with his camera. I had to go because Adam and Missy were calling me an attention whore, so I said goodbye to Donald, thanked him for reading, and we were on our way. So Donald, if you're reading - Thanks again man, it was good meeting you!

המסיבה בערב...../images/Emo105.gif

THE WRAP PARTY Saturday night - Elija's restaurant on the riverfront in Wilmington, just a few blocks down from that morning's celebration. When we got there, they gave us a laminated pass that we were told to wear on a chain around our necks. It was an awesome place - out the back of the restaurant was a large patio that led right out to the walkway right along the water. At first it was very crowded, but then we discovered that there was an adjoining restaurant that was also part of the party. Over there Adam and I were the masters of our own domain and we owned both the bar and the buffet station until word caught on and people started migrating between the two. There were many TV monitors throughout, but also two large screens were set up outside for when the Gag Reel was to be shown. Also, projected onto the water and onto the riverside walkway was "Dawson's Creek" in, you know… THE font. There was drinking, eating (sushi, steak, stuffed potatoes, a waterfall of chocolate for various dipping items...), mingling and drinking. Soon the Gag Reel started and most people moved outside. The first two-thirds of it were hilarious clips and outtakes from Season Six, amazingly well-crafted by our Post Production Department, who had been collecting footage for this very purpose all year. And it paid off, because people were laughing hysterically, including James, who was standing near me and seemed to really enjoy it. The last third of the presentation suddenly became a majorly tear-jerking and sentimental look back at the six seasons of Dawson's Creek. There were montages of who's-kissed-who, who's-fought-who, and a collection of firsts and lasts, all set to the instrumental part of Eric Clapton's "Layla". I just found out that some version of this might be shown at the end of the finale episode. An emotional good-bye to six amazing years. And believe me, the waterworks were flowing and applause erupted at the end of it. And perhaps some hugging. Okay fine, I was crying like a little girl, but c'mon...! More partying… took pictures with Busy as if we were both European fashion models… Josh had blue in his hair and had it pushed up into a mohawk, or as I like to call that look, a faux-hawk… Tom flipped me the bird… Liz crash-stumbled into Paul… OH- there was a fireworks show over the river… someone stole a metal Lobster… and perhaps a metal crab… got Anna and Busy to make out… then got Josh and David Hartley to make out… Next thing I know we're practically the last ones there and I'm trying to find Heather's keys for her from the now-absent valet guy. But all's well that ends well, and I think it's safe to say that an amazing and fun time was had by all. Oh - and perhaps there was some hugging. Thanks for everything, Dawson's Creek.

הרבה הרבה יותר...../images/Emo105.gif
