"Thanks for the interview! It was a pleasure to have the chance to talk with you. I hope you'll keep me in mind if a similar position opens up in the future. Can I ask a favor - so I know what I need to work on, can you please let me know what the top 3 deciding factors were between me and the successful candidate? It would really help my search to get your feedback on it. “

"Additionally I have since realized that some company's policy is to not provide any feedback following interviews. Is that case here?"

""Do you have advice for how I can improve next time?" is still pretty general, but quite a bit better than "so how'd I do?"”

"I believe I got the job I have now because I took an interviewer’s critique seriously.”

"I don't know. When I was 21 a old manager dude gave me feedback after I failed a interview. Some of the best advise I got”

"I’m in the US so norms may be different around this, but I would never ask for feedback at the interview. Usually it takes your interviewers some time to collect their thoughts about you anyway.“

"another reason not to ask at the interview is that they may not have spoken to all the candidates yet. Very often, the reason you aren’t picked for a role is not because anything about you was disqualifying, but you just weren’t as good of a fit as another candidate.”

"I feel like you have to do this after the interview on the phone or by email. I would be worried about putting the interviewers on the spot if I asked this during the actual interview and I also don't think you are going to get any honest answers at the point in the process anyway.”

"You don’t hire anyone internally? I ask and offer that feedback all the time and don’t BS it.”

“I have found the only option that produces results is:

As at the end of the day - while you are physically there - ask, and be forward.”

“i.e. be forward not as in 'be pushy' but be forward in asking several questions to try and elicit an answer. Focus on being very polite at the same time and try to appeal to their better nature”
